Avid readers of my blog will know that I am a huge support of charities. I regularly shop there and often find some great hidden treasures at charity shops. I am also completely aware of how much light these organisations bring to the world and how by supporting them we can help change things. We can give money to cancer research to fight back against a disease that takes so many lives. We can donate our time to causes such as information on Ectopic Pregnancy. One in ninety pregnancies are ectopic, and by supporting charities that help mothers who have experienced this condition, we can help ... read more
Ladybird Tuesday: The Do-Gooder
And we're back! With the most irregular regular blog feature ever - Ladybird Tuesday. Now, keeping in with the theme of all my other recent blog posts here, I'm doing something a little bit different again this week and I'm going to be talking about another new Ladybird title. This time it's The Ladybird Book of the Do-Gooder. Just in case you haven't worked it out by now I should probably explain that this special title has been released to coincide with this year's Comic Relief, and at least £2 from the sale of the book go to Comic Relief. As with the other modern day Ladybird titles ... read more
Seeing how Comic Relief Support the New Horizons Youth Centre
Let's be totally honest. Fundraising can be a bit of a funny thing. You do something to raise money for charity, and you get a bit of a glow as you see the donations stack up on a webpage, but then what happens next? Your personal challenge is over and you might get an email from the donations site you've used telling you how much you raised. And that might be followed up by an email from the charity itself saying thank you, and giving you some examples of how money is spent in general. I guess it can leave you at times feeling a bit flat. But the truth is that behind all that money you ... read more
The Honk Line Reality: Jamie Oliver, Miranda style galloping and a portable pizza oven!
When Team Honk sat and planned The Honk Line walk around London I'm pretty sure that their list included a bullet point saying something like "A-list celebrity to start the walk". After all that's what they managed to pull off! And as evidence, here's Jamie Oliver at the start in London's Waterloo Park. Photo from Mummy Barrow on twitter The reality might be that we were just about to leave the park, slightly later than planned as we were all busy faffing around drinking tea and taking photos of Tanya posing with her teapot, when I saw a man fly down the hill on a kid's scooter with ... read more
The Honk Line: 10 miles, a purple unicorn onesie and afternoon tea
When I first started writing in my little corner of the internet I had no idea quite where blogging would take me. The thing that has probably been most surprising though is the amazing blogging community that I now find myself part of. As I sat alone in my flat back in those early days (nearly nine years ago) I wasn't even sure that anyone would read what I wrote, let alone that I would through my blog meet people that became firm (real life) friends and that we'd all come together to do some amazing things. One of the most amazing projects that I've been involved in has to be Team Honk. ... read more
Sleeping rough in Senegal: how you can help the street children of Dakar
The idea of your child having to spend even one night away from your protection and the comforts of home might be traumatic, so spare a thought for the tens of thousands of youngsters who are sleeping rough night after night on the streets of Senegal’s capital city Dakar. These vulnerable children often lack access to the basics they need to stay healthy. Keep reading to find out more about their plight, and what you can do to help. Shocking statistics The charity Human Appeal, which is involved in a project to help these youngsters, states on its website that around 50,000 children are ... read more
Challenging myself to Swim the Distance
Anyone who follows me on Twitter will know that one of my least favourite times of the week is taking my kids to their weekly swimming lesson. I've always considered swimming a life skill and it's also something that both of them enjoy, but boy, the whole getting them out of the pool, showered and dressed again in a cramped changing cubicle thing can drive me mad! Especially as all three of us are tired and hungry at that point. To make the whole thing somewhat more bearable though I've started using the time that they're in their lessons to try to improve my swimming and have a bit of me ... read more
Latest charity shop haul – May 2015
I've not been having as much luck as usual in charity shops of late. Despite lots of looking there just haven't been any items of clothing I really liked and Ladybird books seem to have dried up a bit since the publicity push for the 100th anniversary of the publisher. Still, all my efforts have turned up a few gems - so here's my latest charity shop haul. I'd love to hear about what thrifty gems you've found recently. ... read more
Jaffa Cake Cupcakes with HomeSense and #RaiseSomeDough
It can't have escaped your attention that Red Nose Day is back for 2015 and come Friday 13th March there will be people up and down the country wearing red noses and doing something funny for charity. My big bit this year is going to be the Comic Relief Danceathon that I'm taking part in the weekend before - please sponsor me here, hint hint! I'm more than a bit scared at the idea of 6 hours of dancing, especially as at the moment I'm into week two of some flu like thing that's really knocked me for six and stopped all my running too. Comic Relief isn't just about physical stuff though. ... read more
Special Edition Weetabix Strawberry for Comic Relief
It seems to be all about breakfast here on Being Mrs C at the moment as we're busy trying out this wonderful special edition Weetabix Strawberry this week. As part of Weetabix's partnership with Red Nose Day they have launched this special Strawberry Flavour Weetabix with 5p per pack being donated to Comic Relief. And if that wasn't enough, everyone who tries Weetabix Strawberry also has the chance to win one of many "nosetastic" experiences as part of the Weetabix Red Nose Day promotion. There are nine different experiences that you could win one of and these could be as cool as flying ... read more
