A friend's wedding gave Mr C and I a fantastic opportunity for a weekend away before Baby C comes along. Somehow I've not been to Bath properly before. I've passed through on the train many times and even been for a job interview there, but the city's delights escaped me until now.
An evening wedding meant that we had plenty of opportunity to explore on foot before we dressed up for our trip to the Assembly Rooms for the ceremony and reception. Even the weather was nice to us! The wedding itself was lovely. A beautiful bride, an opportunity to catch up with old friends, fantastic surroundings and amazing food (although the chilli and yoghurt sorbet was a tad hot!)
The next day wasn't quite so sunny, but we still had time to explore the Abbey. It was hard not to make comparisons to St Albans, but even still Bath scored quite highly. The thing that amazed us both was just how light it was in there, even on quite a dull day.
Talking to one of the guides there I understand that much of the stonework was cleaned as part of a millennium project and I have to say that seeing how lovely it was made me less annoyed about the "voluntary donation" that is taken from you on the way in.
As usual much of my attention went on the stained glass. There's something about the colours (blues in particular) that never fails to mesmerise me.
The centre of Bath itself has some lovely shops and it was a complete pleasure to wander round them looking at lots of nice things. Quite how one place can support just so many shops selling lovely things for the home is beyond me, but looking at what they had to offer was a wonderful way to pass a couple of hours.
One thing of course that Bath is famous for is its architecture. It'd be hard not to imagine a Jane Austen character living in one of these houses as you walk past them. Certainly the walk from the Royal Crescent down to the Assembly Rooms is one that I'm sure many young ladies made with their chaperones on their way to and from dances. Hmmm – guess I ought to add some Austen to my reading list…
