The realisation that we're already in March and that Baby C will be making his or her appearance in around three months time has made me understand that if I don't actually do some of the gardening things that I want to do now then it'll be too late this year and it'll be another year before any hopes at self sufficiency get going.
I decided to start small with a herb pot set that I was given as a Christmas gift. We already have a bit of basil and curly parsley on the kitchen windowsill, but this seemed too good a set not to put to use, so that's what I did.
Very simple to get going as all it required was some compost from the shed, add the seeds, water and leave on the kitchen windowsill keeping the soil moist. I also found a good use for the ice lolly sticks that I've been saving since the summer to help me remember which seeds I planted in which pots.
I'm delighted that just a week later if you take a close look at the basil pot on the right you'll see the fruits of my labour starting to pay off.
The first signs of basil seedlings already. Certainly a good motivation boost for making a start on some of the veg that I want to grow as well. Being able to see results so quickly is fantastic.

Babies fit in really well with gardening! I used to push the pram around as I went. When they were old enough, they sat in a high chair or were in a wooden playpen outside with me.
I also had a sling and even used to do the ironing wearing it!!
I never did housework when they were asleep, that was knitting or reading time. A bouncy chair is useful for moving the baby while you do house-stuff. Mine used to love watching!
