A pair of socks

16/02/2009

FinishedPair

It's taken me a while, but I am so proud to say that I have finally finished my first pair of knitted socks!

I did stop and start these quite a few times, but the practice on the first one certainly made the second one much easier. They're not perfect by a long way, and I'm not so keen on the yarn used, but they're functional as far as socks go.

I started off using the pattern that came with the sock kit that I bought from John Lewis, but soon found myself quite stuck. Luckily the wonderful people at Web of Wool helped me out when I met them at the Knitting and Stitching show last year. This did mean though that the start of the two socks was quite different in terms of length – hence I now have two socks of different lengths! That shouldn't matter though if I only wear them in bed!

The first sock (seen on the left in the photo) went a tad wrong as I got the stitches arranged wrongly across two needles at the end, meaning that the toe Kitchener Stitch bind off is at 90 degrees to where it should be. I'd managed to fix this by the second sock and that one sits much more comfortably on the toe.

The slip slip knit (ssk) to decrease caused quite a bit of confusion (and some holes) until I found this video on YouTube which made everything so much clearer.

We're saving pennies at the moment for a hopeful house purchase, but I'll be planning my first "proper" socks carefully for when I have some pocket money to spend on yarn again.

Oh well done. All successfully knitted socks should be robustly applauded!
