Place of Execution

23/09/2008

I don't watch that much on television, but do tend to find myself drawn to either comedy, factual documentaries or murder mystery type programmes. One programme that falls into the latter category and that I'd been looking forwards to after seeing the trailers was the ITV dramatisation of Val McDermid's A Place of Execution that started on Monday night.

Although I haven't read any recently I read most of McDermid's books a few years ago (mainly via my local library at the time which was excellent at ordering things in for me) and this was one book that really stands out in my memory.

The book tells the story of a 13 year old girl who went missing one winter's night in 1963 from a small northern village. At the time the case wasn't solved and the girl remained missing, but a modern day journalist decided to look into the case again and she interviews the man who was the newly appointed police inspector at the time. The outcome of the journalist's investigations raises many questions and a fantastic number of twists and turns.

The TV adaptation has made a few changes as you would expect, but I was generally quite pleased with the way it was done and particularly liked the way that the action switched between the 1960s and modern day in a similar way to how the narrative in the book worked. The journalist in the story is now making a documentary rather than the book she was writing in the novel, but I guess this change was made to make things a bit more visual for the television audience.

I don't seem to be able to find anything telling me how many parts the adaptation has been broken down into, but will make good use of our Sony Hard Drive Recorder and its series recording facility to ensure I don't miss the rest of it. Modern technology can be a very good thing!
