Ready to Design a Wow Factor Home? Here’s How to Start

For many people, the dream will always be to have a beautiful home. While this may look different from person to person, many of us would love the idea of being able to design our home from scratch. However, a self-build project can feel quite overwhelming at times. Yet if this is something you really want to do, you’ve come to the right place. Here’s everything you need to do to begin.

1. Set a Budget

First of all, the best place for you to start is to make sure that you set a budget. When you’re building your own home, it can get very costly. In general, it tends to be a lot less expensive than buying your dream home. Depending on what you want to build, you may spend hundreds of thousands or even millions in total. But you need to know what you can afford and how you’re going to pay for it before you start.

2. Hire an Architect

When you have a bit of an idea of what you’re doing and how much you’d like to spend, it’s time to hire an architect. When you’re building your own home, you need a professional in place to design the shell and everything inside of it. To do this, make sure you research the kind of architects available. You may want a sustainability-focused architect, such as Wotton Donoghue Architects, to come in and support you. That way, you get a beautiful design that is environmentally conscious.

3. Get the Paperwork Sorted

The next part of the process is to make sure that you get the paperwork side of things sorted. If you have a project manager, this may be something that they can do on your behalf. The process of getting planning permission can take a while, so make sure you’re patient here. While you’re waiting for this, you can also get the rest of your contractor sorted so that you’re ready to go when you’re able to.

4. Begin the Works

Then, when the time comes, you need to get the works underway. From preparing the foundations to building the shell to everything in between, this can all take a while. When it comes to building your home, you may find that it takes years. However, it will always be worth it in the end.

5. Manage Your Expectations

Ultimately, you need to make sure that you’re managing your expectations here. When it comes to designing a wow-factor home, it’s not going to happen overnight. As we have seen, this can take years to complete. However, that doesn’t mean it has to be a stressful experience from start to finish. Instead, when you’re able to manage your expectations, you may find that it goes smoother than you think. Living in a construction site isn’t always easy, but there are ways to manage. Aiming to stay as stress-free as possible and enjoy the process can really help you here. And before you know it, you’ll be in your dream home.
