A beginner’s guide to owning a cat

01/07/2022

If you’ve recently got a new cat or your considering getting one, take a look at the following post. We’re covering some of the essential advice for new cat owners, from bringing your new friend home, to what they need to eat. Keep reading if you want to find out more.

How To Settle A New Cat Into Your Home

When you’re bringing a new cat home, it can sometimes take them a while to feel settled in their new environment. It’s best to try and give them space, so they don’t become anxious or overwhelmed and can get used to the space in their own time. If there are no other cats in the house, this will make it easier for a cat to settle into a home as they will have their own territory. If there are other cats to get used to, then it’s best to give them their own space at first and gradually introduce them while supervised. Try and keep other pets and children away to prevent the new addition from becoming stressed. A pheromone diffuser can help cats to become calmer and more relaxed in a new place too.

What Things To Buy For Your Cat

When it comes to what things you will need to buy for your cat, there are a few basics you should start off with. First of all, you will need feeding bowls, as well as a water bowl or water dispenser which can help with keeping water fresh and cat food that is tailored to their dietary needs. Cats tend to choose where they like to sleep, and you’ll very often find them curled up in random places such as the laundry basket or windowsill. However, buying a cat bed offers them somewhere comfortable and cosy to sleep to help them settle in. Purchasing some toys will help you interact with your cat and bring out their playful side, an indication they feel safe and happy in their new home. Find everything you need for your cat at goYo Pets. It’s also worth taking out insurance for your cat to help cover the cost of any vet bills that might occur.

Bonding With Your Cat

Bonding with a new cat can vary in how long it takes. Some cats become comfortable with their new owners quickly and don’t struggle with affection. Others, however, may take longer to warm up to being cuddled and receiving attention. It’s important to make sure you don’t overwhelm your new cat, approach them gradually or allow them to come to you for attention. Signs that a cat is happy to receive affection include:

  • Purring
  • Slow blinking
  • Playfulness
  • Headbutting
  • A raised tail that’s curled at the top

Keeping Your Cat Safe

One of the biggest worries for new cat owners is making sure they can keep their cats safe. This can be trickier if you have a cat that goes outside a lot, but there are things you can still do to help them to stay as safe as possible. Make sure you take your new cat to the vet as soon as possible to have them fitted with a microchip or update the details on an existing one by contacting the maker. Makes sure your cat also has their vaccinations, especially if they are going to be outside and interacting with other cats.
