6 Interesting Skincare Facts You Should Always Remember

07/03/2022

You might be well-versed in skincare brands, but how much do you really know about your skin? There’s so much to learn about that largest organ, and doing so early enough can help you care for it optimally.

While you may already know some of these facts below, brace yourself for a few surprises.

1.           Aging begins in your twenties

If you’ve always thought aging comes around in your 40s, then this will undoubtedly be a bummer! Experts have found that aging begins around 25 when the body’s collagen production starts to wane. The decrease in collagen causes the skin to lose elasticity, allowing for fine lines.

So if you want to practice anti-aging, your 20s is the perfect time to kick off your routine so you can stay young longer.

2.           Wearing sunscreen daily is one of the best practices yet

If you’re looking to slow down skin aging, wearing sunscreen daily is arguably the best thing you can do. Wear at least SPF 30 (regardless of age and color) to prevent the harmful effects of UV-A and UV-B radiation. Unfortunately, the sun isn’t always your friend. So keep your sunscreen in your bag so you can apply it multiple times a day if you stay in the sun often, such as during summer vacation.

Also, know that: using sunscreen packed with zinc (which is non-greasy and non-irritating) is ideal if you have acne-prone or sensitive skin.

3.           Wearing sunglasses should be part of skincare

Are you up for a summer vacation? Does your work keep you outside often? Then you might want to wear sunglasses with UV protection often.

As you squint under the sun, crow’s feet wrinkles tend to develop. So rather than using this as a fashion tip, consider it an anti-aging practice.

4.           Beauty products on the skin get absorbed into the bloodstream

Parabens, sulfates + SLS, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, etc., in inorganic beauty products, contain toxins that are not only harmful to your body but the environment as well. For example, parabens can trigger irritation in sensitive and eczema-prone skin.

Interestingly, your body typically absorbs about 60% of these chemicals, piling up toxins in your system that can cause internal harm. Fortunately, conscious skincare brands use 100% organic ingredients that are safe for your skin and the environment.

By purchasing such plant-based products, you can finally say bye-bye to chemicals that put your skin at risk.

5.           Black spots show up with more sun exposure

You may be surprised how dark spots keep growing on your skin, but it probably is because it gets sun-exposed often. As they increase in number, they become even more challenging to get rid of.

That’s just one more reason to wear broad-spectrum SPF early enough, starting in your teens.

6.           Your skin changes type over type

You may have always had oily skin since childhood. But climate, hormonal imbalance, and age can switch things up.

For instance, your skin gets dry as you age and lose some hormones. So if you’ve always used products meant for oily skin, it’s time for a change.

Wrapping up

These are just a few interesting facts we believe you might not already know about your skin but can help you better care for it. So if you’ve learned something new today, it’s wise to start adding it to your skincare regime.
