Life in a family home can be hectic. The majority of the time, the place looks like a bomb has hit. On top of which, the furniture which you once loved becomes tatty and ruined. It can be heartbreaking, but the majority of us give up the battle. Before long, we’re putting hot mugs on the table without coasters and neglecting the upkeep of that leather sofa.
This disinterest makes sense when you have kids. What’s the point in caring for your table when your little one draws all over it in crayon? In truth, there are few things your child can do which won’t disappear with a layer of paint or a little love. But, if you start to neglect those pieces, too, the damage will be much harder to repair.
In case you’re wondering why this matters, we’re going to consider three reasons you might want to keep your furniture flourishing.
You might want to reuse it
Even if you think you’re pretty much done with a piece of furniture, it’s worth keeping the condition top notch. After all, you never know when you might want to reuse it. With the current focus on thrift and upcycling, turning to old pieces is a fantastic and cheap way to get the next big thing. But, no amount of effort on your part will be able to cover the chunk you took out of that dresser getting it up the stairs. Nor will you be able to cover those missing handles on the doors. While your furniture is in use, always bear in mind that it could see you through many an interior style over the years. Even if you’re putting a piece in the garage, make sure to cover it and make efforts to keep it protected.
You could pass it on
Even if you have no intention of keeping your pieces, you may reach a stage where you want to pass them on. There are now many reused furniture shops which do fantastic work for charity. You could help the cause by donating those old pieces. But, understandably, a shop won’t accept furniture it can’t sell. Most only take pieces with minimal wear and tear. So, if you want to make use of the furniture donation pick up offered by such companies, it’s important to ensure your pieces meet their guidelines. And, the only real way to ensure that is to keep them in the best condition possible.
You never know how much it’ll be worth
It’s also important to note that trends, especially of an interior style, come around time and again. In the not so distant future, that tatty chest of drawers could become the next big vintage thing. And, if you’ve kept it in good condition, you can be sure you’ll make a fair amount of money back. It would undoubtedly be a blow to know you could make a few hundred on an old piece of furniture, if only you had kept it better.
