Master C is so difficult to wake up in a morning these days. Seeing as he shares a room with his sister at my place the pair of them have got into a bit of a bad habit of staying up far too late (especially for a school night) talking and playing in their room. I had been hoping that after this long the novelty of sharing a room would have worn off, but it seems I was wrong. On a weekend it’s fine because I can let the pair of them have a bit of a lie in, but on school mornings I need to get them both up so they can be ready and leave on time. Usually Little Miss C just takes a bit of encouragement, but Master C is a proper teenager in training and would happily stay there until he got hungry as far as I can tell. Most mornings he dramatically tells me that “the night wasn’t long enough” as if it’s somehow not his fault that he doesn’t want to get up yet. Turning on lights, making a noise and even removing his duvet don’t seem to be enough to encourage him some days. Oh how Elephant in Wakey, Wakey Elephant reminded me of him!
Edgar is trying to wake up his elephant. He tries everything to wake up his elephant. He shouted him and tickled him. Brought in a matching band and a rooster to cock-a-doodle-do at him. He even poured milkshake over this head (accidentally) and popped balloons by his bed. But still elephant slept on. Edgar finally realises how to wake elephant up though and this way doesn’t even need him to raise his voice.
Wakey, Wakey, Elephant! is a beautifully silly book. One to laugh at when you share it with your little ones. One to talk about when you ask them how they can wake people up. One to act out the next time they want to stay in bed a bit longer than they should. One to have fun with. And that’s probably what I love most about Wakey, Wakey, Elephant! It’s a fun book. A feel-good book. A book to make everyone smile. The words work perfectly when read aloud, and the illustrations bring Edgar and elephant to life beautifully.
