A Cinderella Story: If the Shoe Fits

06/02/2017

One thing that I love about classic stories like Cinderella is how they just keep on going all these years after they were originally written or told. It is thought that the Cinderella story was first told in China, whilst the first record of it here in Europe was in Italy. A version of the story closest to the one we know today was published in Paris back in 1697, but I’m pretty sure that 300 years ago no one imagined that we’d be sat here in 2017 discussing new versions of the story being released on DVD. Heck, they wouldn’t even have known what a DVD was!

Out on DVD on the 6th February 2017 is the Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group’s A Cinderella Story: If the Shoe Fits. This musical film follows Tessa (a modern day Cinderella) who is forced to go away on holiday with her evil stepmother, Divine, and her stepsisters Olympia and Athena. Once there Tessa realises that she was only brought on the trip to act as a servant to her stepsisters whilst they audition for lead roles in a stage version of “Cinderella”.

Tessa dreams of auditioning herself and knows that she has what it takes to be cast as Cinderella. With the help of a make up artist, Tessa chances her identity to that of “Bella Snow” to allow her to audition. But how can she cope with her two different identities, her stepfamily and the Prince she is auditioning opposite.

There are familiar faces in the film, starting with Sofia Carson playing the role of Tessa. She’s appeared in several Disney Channel shows and movies, the best known of which being Descendants. In the role of the wicked stepmother is Jennifer Tilly, who was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Bullets Over Broadway. The Prince that Tessa auditions opposite is played by English man Thomas Law, that may be most familiar for playing Peter Beale in EastEnders for four years. It’s funny where these soap stars can end up!

A Cinderella Story: If the Shoe Fits is a fun film for the whole family to sit down and enjoy together, especially with half term coming up as I bet the February weather won’t exactly be kind enough for lots of outdoor activities.
