When I was expecting Master C I turned to books to tryto explain everything to Little Miss C. I found some great stories to help explain the practical side of it all, but with her being only just two I found that she wasn't yet asking questions about the emotional side. When they find out that a new baby is joining the family some slightly older children can really get themselves quite in a tizz about it all and they worry that once the new baby is there Mummy or Daddy won't want or love them any more. I Love You, Alfie Cub is the perfect book to explain those changing family dynamics.
Alfie Cub has two new baby sisters and he thinks they've used up all of his Mummy's love. Being a resourceful cub he heads out to try to find her some more, before realising that he doesn't need to go out to find it. All the love the family needs is already there at home.
I absolutely loved this story. The idea of explaining to a young child that a new baby (or babies) in the family can mean that parents (especially their mummy) are not always able to do everything for them straight away, but that this doesn't mean that they love their older children any less is a very important one, but at the same time one that can be quite hard to get across. I thought this story really demonstrated clearly to young children that mummy was able to have more than enough love to go around, regardless of how many new baby brothers and sisters they may have, and it did it in a completely adorable way.
