Yikes, Stinkysaurus! – Pamela Butchart and Sam Lloyd

07/12/2013

"My favourite dinosaur book ever mummy!"

That's exactly how Little Miss C described Yikes, Stinkysaurus! after a couple of days of reading it, and for a child that's going through a bit of a dinosaur obsession at the moment that's pretty high praise indeed! The fact that this is apparently going to be the first in a series of dinosaur themed books makes it even more exciting.

Stinkysaurus is the smelliest dinosaur there is. He refuses to take a bath and as a result all the other dinosaurs can smell him wherever he goes. He soon becomes the scariest dinosaur of them all – and all because of his smell!

The other dinosaurs decide to take matters into their own hands and in the end force Stinkysaurus to take a bath. Suddenly he's no longer scary, and instead of running away the other dinosaurs now want to stay and play with him. Stinkysaurus realises that it's worth having a bath every now and again if it means that you get friends to play with.

We really enjoyed the rhyming verse in this book – always a hit when you're reading books out-loud with little ones – and LMC also enjoyed spotting all the different types of dinosaurs in the illustrations, and proudly telling me what they all were. Although – that did make me realise that I need to swot up on dinosaur types!

The other thing that I really liked about this book was the fact that it can help explain to young children why it is important for them to bathe regularly. If you have a child who suddenly decides that playing is more fun than getting clean at bedtime I think this story is ideal to help them realise that they don't want to become all smelly like Stinkysaurus.

In just the couple of weeks that we've had this book to review it's already become a firm favourite with LMC and I'd say it is perfect for any little dinosaur fans!

Discalimer: We were sent a copy of Yikes, Stinkysaurus for the purposes of this review.

Is it just me or are there A LOT more dinosaurs than when I was growing up. I think there were 4 dinosaurs when I was that age: Brontosaurus, Stegosaurus, Triceratops, and T-Rex. Now there’s a billion! I don’t even think the Brontosaurus is around any more. Oh, well. I guess I’m just getting old. Thanks for the post and the recommendation!
