Review: Sudocrem Care & Protect

24/09/2013

If anyone tries to tell you that teething nappies don't exist then they're lying. And if they want proof then they're very welcome to come round here and change a few for me!

C+P
Master C's teething big style at the moment and it therefore seemed rather appropriate timing to receive an email asking if I wanted to review a new product from Sudocrem to help prevent nappy rash – Care & Protect.

I think there are very few mums in this country who haven't used Sudocrem at some point on their children's bottoms – I know my mum certainly used it on mine – and the distinctive little grey pot has almost become a symbol of childhood in its own right. I was intrigued to hear that they'd brought out something new though – especially since it's their first new product in 80 years. Could they improve on what they have already?

What they say makes Sudocrem Care & Protect different is that it offers triple protection.

It creates a Protective Barrier to seal in the skin's natural moisture and protect the skin from irritants.

It also contains Vitamin E and Pro Vitamin B5  to condition the skin, keeping it soft, healthy and moisturised.

That protective barrier works in two ways though as it also guards against infection by stopping the chemicals in poo and urine from hurting the skin. At the same time this barrier also helps stop chafing and rubbing from either baby's own skin or the nappy they're wearing.

Rather than the iconic grey tub Care & Protect comes in a handy little tube, with a flip top lid for ease of use.

I've been using Care & Protect for about a week now and am quite impressed with the results. It's a bit strange to use at first as I'm used to a thicker cream in usual Sudocrem, yet this felt more like a lotion and at first I wasn't convinced that it wasn't all going to just rub in and vanish. It does though and you can see the protective barrier that it forms, but at the same time you can also see the skin absorbing some of it to help moisturise it. Master C's bottom is looking better for it, but then it's also hard to know just what state it would be in if I didn't use it, or if I'd just used usual Sudocrem.

The only thing I wasn't convinced by was the tube that it comes in. Admittedly it is more handy for when you're doing nappy changes on the go, but at home I have a system with a handy shelf above the changing table so I can set out everything I need before trying to wrestle the octopus that is Master C into actually having his happy changed. I can normally get the Sudocrem out of the tub with just one hand whilst holding his ankles with the other to prevent him twisting himself off the table, but this just isn't possible with a tube as you need two hands to hold it and squeeze some out. I'm not sure that a more lotion like cream would work in a tub though so I also have no idea what a better solution would be!

Disclaimer: We were sent a tube of Sudocrem Care & Protect for the purposes of this review.
