It seems that not all our growing efforts are in vain this year after all.
Our first attempt at growing potatoes was via a free kit that you could send off for from the BBC Gardeners' World Magazine. The kit contained Vales Emerald seed potatoes and also a patio bag to grow them in. It really was as simple as filling the bag with compost, putting the seed potatoes in and ensuring that they got plenty of water.
This afternoon we decided to see what the bag contained and we were pretty content with our results.
Hopefully we'll get to eat them some time this week, so I'll let you know how they taste.
Although they are not ready to harvest yet, the other crop that we're hopeful about are our tomatoes. Now here I have to admit that these are not from the seeds that I started back in March. Sadly that batch didn't harden off well outside and the second batch were somewhat abandoned when Little Miss C came along. Instead, our very kind neighbour gave us some of their surplus plants and we transferred these to grow bags in the garden.
I have no idea as to varieties (is there any way to tell as they couldn't remember either!?!) but I'm guessing that the ones above are a "normal" variety and the ones below some sort of smaller vine tomatoes.
What ever they are I'm just hoping that they all ripen well and are yummy. There are certainly plenty of them on the six plants that we have so once again, fingers crossed!

That potato kit is amazing – you got quite a harvest out of that bag…

Not wanting to put a downer on the potatoes, but I believe that ‘free’ in this case meant £4.99 P&P, hence making them really very expensive indeed in the grand scheme.

Although the kit did include the growing bag which can obviously be reused next year and would have probably cost about £3 if bought…
