How to Help Your Child Write a Better Essay: 5 Ways Parents Can Help Their Children

30/05/2019

Are you looking to improve your kids writing ability? As a parent, your priority is to give your kids’ sound education and ensure they get the best out of their learning experience. In this informative piece, we are taking you through easy ways to help your kids learn how to write effectively on their own.

This information will help them to develop a good reading and writing habit that would lead them throughout their lives primarily through college when they will have tons of essays to write.

Parents can’t write essays for their kids, but they can provide support or contact professional essay writing companies for assistance. Children don’t always like writing an essay, and this should not come as a surprise. The word “essay” may cause tears to flow and trigger anxiety and anger throughout the day.

But the thing is that your child can do great at essay writing if you provide the right kind of support. Whether they are 7 or 11-year-olds, knowing how to write an essay will help them in the future. These are ways you can help your child write a better essay.

1. Teach Them Essay Structure

Your child needs to know how to go about writing an essay. Teach your child that a good essay has an introduction, paragraphs for each point, and a conclusion. The opening is to introduce the topic, the body explains, describes or argues each point, and the conclusion summarizes in brief what the essay is all about. Let your children know that an article follows the same structure as writing a letter to their friends or pen pals. Emphasize the fact that a poorly written essay can lead to a poor grade.

You can start when your kids are younger to team them essay structure. One of the best ways to get your kids to learn the English composition is to teach them how to read from their young age. Get them kiddies book and read to them even when they can’t read on their own. Spell it out to them every step in the book and let them know the difference between structures.

When they come of age, let them learn to read and summarize on their own. That way they can understand the various parts of an essay.

2. Emphasize the Importance of Research

Kids struggle with essays because they don’t understand the importance of research. Explain to your child that study, combined with what they are taught in school, will provide the information needed for the essay.

Tell them that they will get great ideas from books in the library and on the internet. They should note down anything they find valuable and which could support the essay topic. Make the process exciting and satisfying to your child just to prove that research doesn’t have to be dull and boring.

The best way to achieve this is to give them little assignments to research and write about popular events like Christmas, Thanksgiving and the history behind favorite public holidays. You can spice things up by attaching gifts and exclusive favors to each assignment so you can gain their interest and make the whole project enjoyable.

3. Guide Them to Break Down the Topic

It is usual for your child to complain about the difficulty in essay writing. Encourage them and tell them that if they can understand how to break the topic down, essays won’t be that overwhelming. If your child is given a topic such as “Avengers: Good or Bad Movie?” all you need to tell your child is to create two lists of evidence.

One should contain reasons why the movie is excellent; the other list should show evidence of why the movie isn’t. After making a short introduction, they should take the points on the lists and explain them one after the other, beginning from the right reasons.

4. Guide them on How to Edit

No parents should do all the work for their children as this would make them unable to think on their own. Tell them how to read through their essays and look for mistakes or errors. Let your child understand that it is an excellent academic habit to always read their article carefully before concluding that the work is complete.

They should read it out loud and listen whether it flows well. You can also offer to read it out to them and point out the mistakes.

5. Encourage Constant Practice

Tell your kids to know that nothing will ever stick until they practice it consistently. If they want to be good at essay writing, they have to make out time for practice. The school, your children, may not give them enough practice exercise. The only way to augment this deficiency is to make them practice at home as often as possible.

Make the activity fun and use those TV programs your kids love to watch. For instance, if they are fans of Marvel, give them topics around Avengers, Iron Man or Black Panther. You may choose individual characters such as Hulk, Captain America or the Black Widow. With this approach, your children will begin to enjoy the essay writing and may even start to form their own topics.

Summing It Up

Take advantage of your kid’s young ages to teach them how to write essays effectively.  The following tips will help you put them through the process of writing an essay. With dedication and patience, you will be proud of your efforts.
