Role play is such a vital part of a child’s development. Talk to any Early Years practitioner and they will tell you about what an important stage it is and why pre-schools, nurseries and reception classes all have role play areas and how much the children gain from playing in them. It’s part of how they make sense of the world around them and understand their roles within the world. It stimulates their imagination, aids their social development and can also help children understand scenarios that they may have encountered in real life.
For most children role playing home situations is where they start as it is simply what they are most familiar with. Making a cup of tea for someone, pretending to pour it out into cups and serving it is something that children have been doing for years as they have been watching their parents do it ever since they started depriving them of sleep! That’s why the Morphy Richards Toaster and Kettle set that we were sent to review from Casdon is so perfect. Not only is the kettle a match for a proper one that you can buy from Morphy Richards, but they both also have some functionality.
Children can take the lid off the kettle and fill it with water which they can then pour out into tea cups, or even use in the bath. There is also a switch on the kettle that you can put down as if you were switching it on. The toaster comes with two slices of toast which you can insert into it. The dial on the front makes a clicking noise as you put it down. You can also press the lever to lower the toast into the toaster and the instructions tell me that the toast will then pop up within a “few seconds”. In our experience it was a always nearly a couple of minutes when the toast popped up, but when it did so it was with such force that the toast was propelled across the living room – which Master C thought was one of the funniest things ever!
As soon as Master C saw the toaster and kettle he was straight onto them and offering to make me a cup of tea. It’s something that he loves doing and as soon as the kids visit my mum’s house they are always going straight to her box of plastic cups and plates and role playing making everyone meals or running a cafe and this set is the perfect addition to that sort of role play fun. I also like to think of it as training for when he’s old enough to make me a real cup of tea!
The Morphy Richards Toaster and Kettle set is available to buy online here and is priced around £9.99.
