Great Things Can Happen In The Garden- Don’t Let Yours Be Wasted Space!
For most of us, there’s a big chunk of the year where we simply don’t use the garden. When it’s cold, wet and dark outside, it’s usually more preferable to be wrapped up in the warm than digging around in snow, rain and sleet. Which is fine, none of us can control the weather and we just simply have to switch up what we can do around it. However what it does mean is that when the warmer months arrive, we really should be making the most of our outdoor space. It’s essentially an extra ‘room’ we can use on our property, and when it’s only really nice to use for half of the year then why not use ... read more
Winter Wonders: Enjoying Your Garden When It’s Cold
Image source Just imagine it from your gardens point of view. In the spring and summer, all you and the kids want to do is be in the garden; playing tag, holding barbecues, curling up on a sun lounger with a book you probably won’t finish, having water fights and making your beds blossom with color. But then one leaf turns crisp and golden and the back doors shut, your garden becoming totally forgotten about for the next five months as you and your family don knitted clothing and enjoy hot chocolate in front of a fire. Poor garden. Luckily, it doesn’t need to be like this. You don’t ... read more

The Children’s Garden – Matthew Appleby
It may be freezing cold whilst I sit here writing this, but looking out at our back garden there is no doubt that there are lots of signs of spring out there. A very early spring when you consider how many daffodils are already brighting up the flower beds. I have so many good intentions about how we're going to use our back garden going forwards. Every year I say that and so far I've been foiled every year by the kids not quite being old enough to join in enough for me to make actual progress. 2016 WILL be different though. I'm sure of it. Master C is now very nearly three and a half, and ... read more
Exploring nature in our back garden as a Wilko Wild Bird Blogger
I'm pretty sure that I'm not the only parent that's keen for their kids to understand and appreciate the nature that's all around us, but the thing that always amazes me is how many people overlook the nature that's right there under their noses in their own back garden. Mr C and I have always been big nature lovers and that was cemented when we bought our first home together. Instead of having a back garden we instead explored a local community nature reserve that was at the end of our street. It gave us the desire to create our own little bit of a nature paradise once we had our own back ... read more
Summer 2014: Day 12 – Trelissick and Godolphin
Time to step back a couple of weeks to our wonderful holiday in Cornwall. Determined to make the most of our National Trust membership yet again we set off this morning to Trelissick Garden. Now Trelissick isn't like all the other National Trust gardens as there's something very special about its setting - on its own peninsular. The garden is high up with some spectacular views of the River Fal and some lovely twisting paths that lead you down to the water, and the ferry port at the bottom. When we were there the colours were absolutely amazing - with the hydrangeas providing a palate ... read more
Spring is sprung in the veg garden
A comment our neighbour made over the garden fence the other day really got me thinking. So often with two young kids at home it feels pretty much impossible to get any "projects" actually seen through to completion. Everything seems half done and there are a million and one things that both Mr C and I want to start, finish or just make progress on, yet it can be impossible to make time with the kids. However, in July it will be 5 years since we moved to this house and apart from making and growing two small children in that time we have also managed to completely transform our ... read more
Garden preparations
Recently I've been doing a lot of looking back at old blog posts and it's fascinating to see how much has changed over the years. Before I was doing as much commercial work here on Being Mrs C I really did use the blog to capture so much more of what was going on day to day - both in terms of our lives and also what we were doing with the house and garden - and I really miss that I'm not doing so much of that any more. It's always been fascinating to look back and see what I was planing or doing with the kids a year or more ago and I fear that in future years when I look back ... read more
