Avoiding Renovation Nightmares with Extra Vigilant Checks

Avoiding renovation nightmares is almost impossible if you have a relaxed attitude towards the job at hand. Just as much as the contractors doing the work, you need to be hands-on with a positive attitude and a proactive approach to how the work begins, gets done and ends. From licensing and insurance to consulting with experts, here are a few suggestions to get started.

Frequent Site Inspections

It’s often overlooked, but a proactive approach to monitoring the site can be one of the most effective when it comes to avoiding a situation. When you constantly have eyes on, you can spot incoming issues and prevent them altogether. Alongside a professional such as a building and pest inspection service, you can also avoid nightmares that can suspend renovation efforts, such as mammal, bird and insect infestations that must be handled in the correct manner.

Verified Licensing and Insurance

It’s all too easy as a trusting person in a non-expert position to take a contractor’s word for it that they can get a job done. Maybe they show you a portfolio of the work they can do, and everything looks excellent. However, that doesn’t mean they have the necessary licenses and insurance to carry out the work. As such, always ask for proof of these, or it could cost you dearly, even at the risk of being ordered to reverse any work that has been completed.

Avoiding Renovation Nightmares with Contracts

Renovation isn’t usually as easy as picking up the phone and booking some work. In fact, a UK survey found that 45% of Brits struggle to even find suitable tradespeople to do the work. So when considering a home renovation, you may face some hurdles getting the right people. However, even when you do, ensure you work with them on contracts that suit everyone, including itemised jobs, setting milestones and payment upon completion of said milestones.

Consulting with Experts

There are some tasks that require professionals and some that you can do yourself on a renovation job. Either way, it is vital that you bring in independent experts to assess the work being done. DIY jobs might be good but could be improved, and there’s always the chance your contractors are cutting corners. A fresh set of eyes can spot incoming problems and make suggestions for improvement before they become major works that are hard to remedy.

Gaining Permits and Approvals

One of the biggest challenges you can face for a project is gaining home renovation permits and approvals for carrying out specific works. These are usually related to major jobs such as gas lines, plumbing and electricity, but can extend to installing something as trivial as a fence. So, it always helps to ensure that the necessary permits and permissions have been obtained, or you can face hefty penalties and orders to roll back any changes to their previous state; at your cost!

Summary

Ongoing site inspections are one way of avoiding renovation nightmares that can cost time, money and tears. Of course, it also helps to negotiate contracts with any outside companies, and never begin a renovation job without the necessary permits and local approvals.
