Simple Foods You Can Grow Indoors Without a Garden

Growing your own food seems like it can be a really complicated process. And for some things, it can be a bit trickier to get started and produce results. But really, you don’t always need access to an allotment or to have a huge garden facing the right direction and all the latest gadgets.

With more and more people choosing to grow their own food in any capacity, we have some simple foods you can grow at home indoors with ease to get started.

Fresh Herbs

A classic and simple choice to get started with.

Herbs are where people start their growing journey. The reason for this is that they don’t need much space, they grow quickly, and you’ll tend to use them often. Varieties such as basil, mint, coriander and parsley are all popular herbs to lean into the growing at home experience.

All they need to thrive is light and consistency. But don’t make the mistake of treating them like normal houseplants. They will need regular trimming to keep them producing, and if you don’t do this, they’ll just go leggy and stop being beneficial. So pop them on a windowsill that gets a lot of natural light when the soil starts to dry out, then cut when you need.

Strawberries

Every single person in the UK will have some memory of homegrown strawberries in some capacity. These are what beginners and children start experimenting with first.

And to grow them indoors, all they need is some space, a pot, good drainage and consistent light. Like herbs, a sunny windowsill works.

Here’s the thing: growing strawberries indoors won’t get you massive yields, but they do grow fast enough to keep things interesting and are a great place to start and learn your craft before upscaling.

Remember, keep the soil moist, don’t let them sit in water, rotate the pot occasionally so all sides get light and then enjoy the literal fruit of your labour.

Mushrooms

Mushrooms are where things get a little bit more fun. They are different to other foods on this list but not overly complicated if you don’t want them to be.

Growing mushrooms doesn’t require sunlight; they do have different growing conditions you need to meet and a process thats more than simply watering and ensuring they’re trimmed when needed.

If you’re new to growing mushrooms, then you need to start with easy mushroom grow kits to get things started. They are less complicated, have everything included that you need, and all you do is focus on delivering the right growing conditions. You need a slightly humid space that’s also cool; the level of moisture is really important. Then follow the basic set-up instructions on the kit, and the mushrooms will grow. Usually, really quickly. It is a step up from your potted veggies and herbs, and well worth trying out if you enjoy eating mushrooms.

Spring Onions

Closing this list is spring onions. These are probably one of the easiest ones on this list, too.

You can grow spring onions from leftovers. You don’t need to go out and buy anything. They just need light and water.

Stick the ends of your spring onions in water, give them light, and they’ll regrow in days. It’s that fast.

If you want them to last a bit longer, move them to soil once they’ve started shooting up again. And they don’t need much space, but they do grow quickly, so you’ll need to stay on top of cutting and using them.
