Keep Warm, Stay Cool: How To Regulate The Temperature In Your Home

12/02/2026

Changing weather conditions and unpredictable seasons can make it difficult to know what to expect from one day to the next. Throw in challenges, such as old heating systems or houses in need of TLC, and it’s tough to get the temperature of your home just right. The good news is that simple solutions can make a big impact. In this guide, we’ll share some top tips to help you keep warm during winter and stay cool when temperatures rise.

Upgrade your heating system

If you have an old boiler, it’s beneficial to consider upgrading your heating system. Updating is often more cost-effective in the long term than carrying out running repairs and using outdated systems to heat your home. New units perform better and they are more energy efficient. It’s worth contacting local companies and getting quotes based on your requirements, preferences and budget. In some cases, you can spread the cost of a new boiler to make it more affordable.

Add air conditioning

If you struggle to keep cool when it’s hot, sunny and dry during the summer, adding air conditioning to your home is a brilliant idea. Air conditioning units lower the temperature of living spaces to enhance comfort. You can set the temperature manually or use smart systems to control your units remotely. It is important to consider maintenance and running costs as well as the price of installation if you’re exploring this option. It’s best to place AC units in rooms like bedrooms that should be cool and comfortable.

Set a thermostat

Setting a thermostat is an easy way to control the temperature throughout your house. The recommended temperature for indoor living spaces is 18-22 degrees, but you can modify the setting to suit your personal preferences. If you lower the temperature, you can also save energy and reduce bills. If you have a smart system, you can operate your heating and cooling settings remotely. This means you can increase or decrease the thermostat temperature if you’re going to be home late, it’s hotter or colder than usual, or you want to conserve energy.

Insulate

Insulating your home has incredible benefits for energy efficiency but it also has a big impact on internal temperatures. Improving insulation reduces heat loss and boosts heat retention during the colder months and it can also lower temperatures when it’s hot outside. There are various solutions to explore, from DIY hacks to professional insulation services.

Windows and doors

How you use your windows and doors can affect the temperature indoors. While leaving windows and doors open increases airflow to add coolness most of the time, it is best to avoid leaving them open on very hot days. Keeping doors and windows shut and using draft excluders in the winter can help you keep heat in. If your windows and doors are damaged, broken or old, it may be wise to consider replacing them as a long-term solution to improve insulation and lower energy bills.

It can be difficult to get the temperature in your home just right, especially when the weather is unpredictable. Simple steps like upgrading your heating system, adding an air conditioning unit, improving insulation, setting a thermostat and choosing when to keep your windows and doors open or closed can make a big difference.
