Make Your New House A Home By Addressing These Pressing Priorities As Soon As You Move

10/09/2025

We all know that buying a house can be stressful, and you probably hope your life will calm down after moving day. But, did you know that sitting on your laurels when you first move into a property can be one of the worst home-moving mistakes you’ll make?

In fact, post-move is when the hard work really begins on your end, because now is the time to start making your new house a home. Luckily, if you’ve had a survey done as you should, then you’ll already have a pretty clear idea about the most pressing improvement priorities after your move. But, if you’re unsure where to begin, we’ve got a quickfire guide to the pressing jobs you’ll want to tackle during those first few weeks in your new home.

# 1- Electricity and Plumbing Upgrades

If your survey pulled up problems with the electricity or plumbing in your new property, then you should prioritise these tasks first. You simply can’t live in a house with electricity or plumbing that dates back to the 80s. While you may assume that the previous owner got along just fine, outdated home infrastructure poses a significant safety risk.

Jobs like electrical rewiring can also be incredibly disruptive, and it’s far better to get this taken care of before you’ve unloaded your life’s belongings and got your home looking nice. So, address this problem first. Even if you have to move into temporary accommodation for a few weeks, you’ll be able to settle far more quickly once the work is done than if you had it hanging over you!

# 2 – Redecorating

We know what you’re thinking – surely there are more important new home tasks than decorating? Of course there are, but when it comes to settling into your new property, don’t overlook the importance of decoration. This is a quickfire task that you can immediately tackle yourself, and it’s the single most important way to settle into your new space.

You don’t need to decorate your entire new property right away, but putting your own mark on the rooms you’re planning to use the most is certainly an important step worth prioritising!

# 3 – Securing Your Outbuildings

If you have sheds or a garage in your new home, then bear in mind that these should also be a priority after your move. That’s because these are some of the most commonly neglected areas by previous owners, and leaving them to their own devices can leave your belongings at risk of everything from theft to weather damage.

Key steps to take here will include crucial repairs and shed replacements. You’ll also want to research the benefits of insulated garage doors or other similar improvements, and think about whether these could be relevant to your new property. Then, you’ll have somewhere safe, secure, and dry to store all of your overflow unpacking when you get around to it!

Moving home might feel like the end of a long journey, but the work doesn’t really stop until you address pressing priorities like these!
