Six Things To Do Before Moving Home

10/06/2025

When getting ready to move home, it can feel as though you’ve got 100 different things to do – and unfortunately, that’s not far from the truth. After all, you’re making a significant life change, even if you are staying within the same neighborhood.

Of course, this can make it a little difficult to figure out where to begin. With that in mind, here are six things you must do before moving home.

1. Hire a moving company. Working with a company that specializes in removals can make moving a lot less stressful. This is because you do not need to think of the logistics of transporting heavy or bulky furniture from A to B, or try to fit everything you own into a single car. You can simply arrange for your belongings to be taken from one property to the next. However, you should be sure to book in advance to get the date you want/need.

2. Declutter. Decluttering is also helpful when moving home. This is because it helps you to better organize the space, making it easier for potential buyers to see its potential during viewings. It also means that you have fewer things to pack, as you’re not taking things you no longer need or use with you to your new home.

3. Make sure to inform people of your change of address. Whether you receive bills to your door or letters from friends and family, letting people know you have moved is also important. In addition to this, it is often worth stopping by the postal office to ask them to forward any mail to your new address, especially if you’re not quite sure who you need to inform ahead of time.

4. Say goodbye. Moving home can be quite an emotional experience, especially if you have lived in one place for quite some time. As such, giving yourself the chance to say goodbye can make this process a little easier. For example, you may want to visit all of your favorite local hotspots once again, or invite your friends over for one last dinner party. Either way, it is better to acknowledge your feelings as opposed to dismissing them.

5. Keep your cool. Moving can be stressful, but getting overwhelmed will not help things run any smoother. In fact, it will only make things worse. As such, you should make sure that you keep your cool throughout every stage of the process, even when things aren’t going your way. To achieve this, try to make sure that your entire life does not revolve around the move itself, and give yourself a break from planning when you need one. It also helps to talk about how you are feeling!

6. Ask for help. While nobody likes asking for help, moving is something that is difficult to do on your own. As such, don’t be afraid to reach out and ask those around you from support during this time, whether you want someone to watch your pet while you settle in, or lift some heavy boxes!
