Renovating a Room on the Cheap: Three Tips for Success

16/12/2024

If you’ve decided to renovate a room and have been working out the logistics, you’ll know that it can be a complicated, very involved task indeed. One of the crucial aspects is budget: having added up all the different elements, decorating and adding new furniture can end up costing a small fortune.

It doesn’t have to be that way, though – there are plenty of ways to redo a room on the cheap, and the beauty is, no one will ever know that it barely cost you anything. In this article, you’ll learn about three important aspects that go into renovating a room when cash is tight!

The Importance of Planning Ahead

One of the most crucial aspects of renovating a space with a small budget is to plan ahead and properly organise things before you start.

The point at which things start to get super expensive is most often when something unforeseen happens. That isn’t to say that you won’t hit potentially expensive roadblocks if you’re organized, but it does drastically lessen that risk.

Have a budget in mind and make sure that you stick to it as closely as possible. This means building a shopping list factoring in every cost to the letter, and getting advice from other people, such as experienced tradesmen, on whether you’re likely to encounter problems with certain areas.

It’s also a good idea to do things in phases. When money’s tight, there’s no harm in doing part of the job, and then waiting until you have more available funds to tackle the next part – this also mitigates the aforementioned risk of unexpected expense to an extent.

On Furniture

When you undergo a renovation project, you’ll find that usually the furniture is the most expensive part. You can avoid the cost by buying second-hand products, or even better, shopping for discount furniture. These wares are usually brand new but don’t come with a hefty price tag, meaning that you don’t have to spend a lot to create a high-quality atmosphere.

You can also upcycle and revamp your old furniture. You’d be surprised about what a quick sand and a fresh coat of paint can do for an old wardrobe or bedframe, so don’t be so quick to throw out your old gear. If you do want to get rid of it, try selling it – you may be able to make some extra cash to put back into the renovation project.

Focus On the Most Impactful Changes

If you’re trying to make things look good for cheap, it’s best to focus on bang for your buck – and that doesn’t just mean in the monetary sense.

When you’re choosing the main items or features of a room, choose one or two elements that are going to stand out versus a lot of little things. Stand-out lighting features in the corner of the room; an impressive, all-encompassing piece of wall art; a particularly extravagant-looking rug – prioritise items that stand out, and when you do a general scan of the room, you won’t notice the smaller elements that had to be sacrificed.

Wrapping Up

Hopefully, the tips in this article have inspired you to tackle that room that’s been bugging you, no matter the available funds. You can always make a big impact with small changes – just make sure you plan things out carefully and be strategic!
