Yes, You Really Can Hygge Your Outdoor Space

We tend to think of hygge as something that people do indoors. They make their properties cozy and welcoming. It’s the ultimate in comfort.

Because of this, few people ever consider how they can make their outdoor spaces more hygge. But, interestingly, it’s entirely possible. In fact, it’s something that you can start doing right now.

When you think about what hygge means, there’s no real reason why you can’t apply it to outdoor spaces. It’s all about making the home feel as relaxed and comforting as possible. This is something that you can apply equally to both indoor and outdoor spaces.

So what, specifically, can you do?

Make It An Experience

Hygge is about more than just candles and blankets. It’s also about creating an experience, too.

Many people, for instance, try to turn their outdoor areas into event spaces. For instance, you could transform your patio area into a place to relax and watch movies. This way, you can get the whole family together and have a great time. Add take-out, and you immediately have a wonderful hygge experience.

Add Blankets

Blankets are a staple of indoor hygge spaces. But there is no reason why you can’t add them to your outdoor areas, too.

Adding blankets is incredibly easy to do. You just drape them over your outdoor seating or even on your tables. Just make sure that you place them in covered areas to avoid them getting damp. If you can, find nylon-based blankets that are suitable for being outside in all weather.

Make It Green

Hygge outdoor spaces should remind you of cozy outdoor spaces from when you were a child. The more green you can make them, the better.

Try using roll on turf to cover your outdoor spaces. It’s hygge because it’s easy to put down and doesn’t require the same effort as growing a regular organic lawn from scratch.

Add An Outdoor Fireplace

Outdoor fireplaces are becoming more common. These are usually gas-fired units built into your external walls. However, you can put them anywhere.

Gas fireplaces look beautiful and provide extra warmth and coziness in the winter. You can adorn them with pebbles, cut logs, and attractive siding to complete the look. If you have space, add a gas-fired BBQ so that you can cook and stay warm at the same time, even if it’s cold outside.

Give Your Outdoor Areas A Pergola

Pergolas are a popular hygge addition to outdoor spaces because they protect you from the elements while letting you bask in nature. They’re considerably less expensive to install than you might think. Plus you can use them as a support structure for hanging lights, mirrors, and even drapery.

Mix Different Styles

Lastly, try mixing different styles in your hygge space. Having a variety of furnishings makes the space feel more relaxed. Pair wood with brick, and rattan with tiles. Ensure that all the materials you use feel warm and welcoming. Focus on beige, light browns, dark browns, copper, and red.
