Foods That Children Must Have for Better Eye Health

12/05/2022

The coronavirus pandemic had been hard on all of us. Due to the shutdown of schools and colleges, classes went online, and children found themselves learning from the screen of mobiles and laptops. This adversely affected the studies and kids’ performance and had a negative impact on their eye health.

ENT specialists at Texas ENT Specialists, Medical Center location reported that eye consultations saw a huge spike during the COVID-19 pandemic. Experts suspect this to be an ongoing trend in upcoming years and advise parents to take proper care of their child’s nutrition. As parents, all we worry about is our child’s health. So, below we have shared foods that you should feed your children for better eye health.

Berries

Your eye needs the highest amount of antioxidants. Berries have vitamin C, a great source of antioxidants that helps protect the layers of the eyes. Especially with summers approaching us, it’s a great time to feed your kids these little nuggets and make sure they take all the nutrition.

Nuts

Nuts, such as almonds, cashews, and peanuts, contain omega three fatty acids and vitamin E, which are considered nutrition for better eye health. They protect your kid’s eyes from free radicals that could damage the eyes’ tissues. A handful of a few nuts every day would be enough to provide the nutrition your kid’s eyes need.

Kale

Leafy greens, such as kale and spinach, are advised for healthy eye growth and cut down the chances of eye-related diseases like cataracts and macular degeneration. Kale contains carotenoids like lutein and zeaxanthin, which protect the retina. It can be best clubbed with a sandwich or salad, making it an easy yet yummy option.

Eggs

Eggs make great eye food. They contain vitamin A, which protects the cornea and the eye’s surface. The yolks also contain lutein, zeaxanthin, and zinc, which are all crucial for healthy eye growth and preventing night blindness.

Fruits (Vitamin C)

Fruits rich in Vitamin C, such as grapes and oranges, are a great source of nutrition for eye health. Vitamin C helps form and maintain connective tissues, even collagen, which is present in the cornea of the eye. Moreover, vitamin C also promotes the growth of blood vessels in the eye.

Omega 3

Omega 3 fatty acids prevent high eye pressure, which often leads to glaucoma. It also helps prevent dry eye syndrome, where a person doesn’t shed enough tears. This condition could be very irritating as it causes itchiness and redness in the eye.

Worst Foods for Eye Health

You already know about the best eye foods for your child; now take a look at the worst foods that can harm your child’s eyes.

  • Processed meats
  • Pasta
  • Bread
  • Fried foods
  • Soft and cold drinks
  • Caffeine

Final Thoughts

Your child doesn’t know the best for them, but you do. Make sure you do your part when it comes to providing them with the best healthcare, especially eye health. Feed your kid enough healthy food ensuring that the modern-day education system does not hurt their sensitive eyes.
