How to Create a Cute & Functional Nursery Room for your Baby

11/10/2021

Creating a beautiful yet functional space for your tiny bundle of joy is incredibly fun. It is one of the few opportunities you have to create a beautiful space for your little one where you can call all the shots. Soon enough, they are going to be older and have opinions on every tiny thing. You want your baby’s first home to be stylish while still being comfortable. Here are a few tips for creating that cute and functional nursery room for your tiny tot:

Have a theme

The first step when creating a nursery room should be to pick a theme. Everything will be in cohesion when you have a specific theme that guides the whole decorating process. You can get a piece like a rug or a crib that you love and work around that. After settling on a baby room theme, you should then choose a color scheme. You could go for a color scheme that you love but is not too distracting for your baby. Many people like to stick to delicate palettes for their babies’ rooms. Having a theme and color scheme unifies the nursery, making it look intentional and not too over the place.

Lighting

Lighting is an integral element of design. For your nursery, it is necessary to avoid harsh lighting. Have soft lighting in the room to make it feel warm and inviting. With soft lighting, the contrast between the dark and light is bearable, therefore, avoiding overstimulation of the baby. The baby will be comfortable enough to rest well when the light is not too harsh. For aesthetic reasons, pick a light fixture that makes a statement. Dramatic lighting that is in line with the general theme of the nursery serves as an excellent focal point.

Select functional and ageless furniture

When selecting furniture for the nursery, it is not enough to get furniture that looks good. There are other factors to consider. Safety should be a priority. Numerous furniture options in the market look attractive but may not be safe for your little ones. If buying a crib, ensure that the sidebars are high enough and have minimal space between the bars. Your baby should not be able to get stuck or pass through the bars. Consider getting a baby crib cushion to make the bed softer and cozier. Invest in furniture pieces that your baby can use for a long time. Things like a crib that converts into a toddler bed are worthwhile investments. You can also get furniture that doubles up as storage spaces too.

Install a cute little library

Add a beautiful floating shelf to display all your baby’s favourite books and make storytime even more fun. A collection of books on an open shelf adds a great décor touch while animating an otherwise plain wall.

Storage

As little as they are, babies usually come with lots of stuff. From diapers to clothes and also toys.  When creating your nursery, find storage solutions that have an aesthetic appeal lest your nursery ends up looking cluttered. You could get a storage ladder to place blankets and towels neatly. You could also install hanging shelves or get a dresser with drawers where you can tuck away those eyesores. Wicker baskets are also an excellent storage solution. They save space while making the toy tidy-up process more manageable. Get baskets in neutral colors or go with the color scheme of the nursery.

Add a gallery wall

Add a gallery wall in your baby’s nursery. You can frame whimsical prints or go the sentimental route by having a gallery wall with family photos. You could also create a feature wall using wallpaper that is easy to install.

Add some touches from other family members

Your baby has a lot of people that love and care for them. In most cases, our friends and family live in different parts of the country and the world. You can bring them closer by incorporating the lovely elements they gift your baby in the nursery. Add a few pieces in the nursery to have more warmth and love in the room.

Make memories

Have the nursery full of memories by hanging some baby items like their first booties, their first story, or any other memorable thing on the walls. You can even put a print of their first footprint and display it on the feature wall.

Get thrifty

Upcycle. You can create a beautiful space for your little one while being mindful of the environment. Go to thrift stores or on eBay to source unique pieces for your baby’s nursery. Give those beautiful pieces in the thrift store a new home. Thrifting is an excellent way to create a perfect space when working within a tight budget. Just make sure you sanitize the pieces before bringing them into the nursery.

Avoid clutter

The nursery has a lot of traffic, from you carrying the bay back and forth to when the baby starts to move around. It is, therefore, necessary to manage clutter in the room. That ensures that no one is tripping over any items in the nursery. The simplest way to avoid clutter is finding various functional storage spaces to tuck away things when you finish using them.

Show the fifth wall some love

Do not forget the ceiling. See, babies spend most of their time on their back. You can give your little one something to contemplate by painting the ceiling in a calming color or a lovely mural. Decorating the ‘fifth wall’ enhances the theme of the nursery even further.

Have a sanitation station

Remember, babies are fragile. Their immunity is not strong enough to handle common diseases. You can ensure that your nursery is germ-free by having a sanitation station with all the supplies you will need to keep things clean and sterilized. Have paper towels and antibacterial gels at hand to clean surfaces. Remember to have a diaper disposal system and a different hamper for soiled clothes.

Final Remarks

The tips above will guide you to creating the perfect little spot for your baby. Ensure you make it a safe haven for your little bundle of joy!
