Artificial vs Real: Which Grass Is Best For Your Garden?

04/06/2020

If you are considering overhauling your garden then there is one question that should play on your mind; “Do I want artificial or real grass”?

The line is fairly well split between the two options and when someone comes down on one side they can be fairly hard to move. Of course, both have their limitations but both have their benefits as well. Here you can see both, and decide if the grass really is greener.

Purchase and Installation

Artificial grass

Artificial grass requires quite a bit of kit to install properly, including but not limited to:

  • Excavation tools
  • Edging
  • Skip hire
  • Weed Membrane
  • Artificial grass
  • Nails
  • Turf cutter

The cost of all of these can add up to the thousands, depending on your garden size and location. Artificial grass doesn’t require constant gardening, de-weeding, watering, cutting, and maintenance. Thes means you can save money and space on potentially expensive gardening equipment such as lawnmowers. If you really want to make sure that you’re getting the best value before you buy, then why not order free grass samples online?

Real grass

A real lawn, on the other hand, would require:

  • Skip
  • Edgin
  • Turf
  • Turf cutter
  • Soil

This is more likely to be less than half of the artificial grass price. However, the costs add up on long term care, especially when you consider lawn feed, gardening tools, water, and time invested. Time invested is where you can be caught as real grass takes a lot of extra care. Especially with pets and playing children potentially damaging or killing certain areas of your lawn.

Look and feel

Many people simply cannot get past the look and feel of artificial grass. Not only this but they take great care and pride in the care and attention they provide to their real grass. Some see the artificial grass as too green and with a strange feel to it. Especially if they buy the cheaper grass on the market. While the high-end artificial turf mimics real grass very closely, to those with a preference, being up close and personal with it really shatters the illusion. Plus on a nice warm summer day, there really is no smell quite like that of freshly cut grass.

Longevity

When well kept, artificial grass can last up to 20 years in some cases. To reach this though requires some limits on hard use and diligent cleaning when required.

Real grass on the other hand requires maintenance regularly, in order to prevent it from dying and requiring further restoration work to it. Artificial grass is a better alternative to those needing a hard-wearing and long-lasting lawn.

Conclusion

Many homeowners simply cannot get over the look and feel of artificial grass compared to real grass. However, if someone is looking for a long term solution to their gardening problems then artificial turf is most likely the way to go. Just remember that long term care for real grass can start to seriously outweigh the initial costs of installing the artificial turf. Consider the long-term implications when deciding which one to purchase.
