Raising Talented Kids: How To Support Your Children To Help Them Achieve Their Dreams

12/02/2020

Being a parent is a constant challenge. There are so many decisions to make, each of which can shape your child’s outlook on life and the choices they make in the future.

With so many child prodigies struggling to achieve their dreams in adulthood and becoming miserable at the amount of work they had to do during their childhoods, it’s clear that putting too much pressure on kids can be damaging and unproductive.

At the same time, ignoring their potential could also have a negative effect on their wellbeing, so it’s important that you strike a balance to ensure your child grows up to be talented and ready to be the best adults they can be.

As a parent myself, I’ve worked out a selection of ways to inspire my children and still give them the chance to be kids.

Feed Their Imaginations From A Young Age

Young children are often plonked in front of the TV by stressed parents, but it’s important that you try to introduce them to a variety of arts and experiences when they’re little. They might not remember the details of what you showed them, but they could develop a love for art and learning. Introduce them to music, art and literature by reading to them, playing them music and filling your home with beautiful artworks for them to admire as they grow.

Invest In Their Education

A quality education will influence your child throughout their life, so it’s important that you invest in it. Investing in education means different things to different people, depending on your outlook and the facilities available in your local area. You might want to send your child to private school, or you might prefer to invest in lots of extra-curricular activities and tuition to help nurture their talents. This can be expensive, so consider spreading the cost by taking out a personal loan. Citrus Loans offer you the chance to find a handpicked selection of lenders who will suit your needs, meaning that you can pay back the money you spent on enhancing your child’s life over time, rather than all at once.

Lead By Example

Kids follow what they see adults doing, and emulate those they respect, so it’s important that as their parent you show your child the value of hard work. Teach your child that it’s important that they respect their limitations, but also that they strive towards what they’re aiming for. If you have a positive working attitude yourself, then your child will witness this and work towards achieving it themselves. Make sure that you are constantly evaluating your own work ethic and values as well as those of your child, so that you can help both of you to achieve your goals and become the best possible versions of yourselves.

Teach Them Sensible Online Practices

Social media and high exposure to the internet can have many negative effects on a child’s development, including making them feel disheartened if they don’t achieve the ‘success’ they see portrayed online. As such, it’s important that you monitor what your child does online and teach them to see the truth behind a lot of the exaggerations that are shown on social media. Work with your child and teach them to use social media and the internet productively, rather than getting sucked into an inaccurate world view.

Show Them How To Know When They’re Enjoying Something And When To Stop

Teaching your child to know for themselves when they’re ready to stop doing something will give them a valuable skill they can apply to a variety of situations. Whenever your child achieves something, it’s important that you praise them based on how happy the success made them feel, rather than the achievement itself. This will reinforce the idea that success needs to make them feel happy, and that without this positive emotion they are not truly achieving anything. This will help them to understand when they should give up on something and when they are simply finding things hard.

Learn To Push Without Going Too Far

Children sometimes need to be guided in the right direction and encouraged to continue to work on their skills, but it can be hard to find a way to do this without forcing them to do things they don’t enjoy. One of the most important factors in learning to push your child without going too far is to know their personality and when they need to be pushed, and when they’re ready to stop. This will allow you to make the right decision for your child every time.

The most important thing to remember is to always try your best to support your child’s decisions. It might be difficult, especially if you don’t agree with their choices, but remember that it’s their life and it’s important that you respect that.
