Using Firewood As A Renewable Energy Source

More and more people are ditching their radiators and underfloor heating systems in favour of using the fireplace. It is not surprising as there are many benefits associated with using firewood as your choice of heating in your home. There is no denying that it warms up a room effectively and you have the added benefit that it is a lot cheaper as well. Nonetheless, one of the main reasons why so many people are turning to firewood is because it is the most environmentally friendly option when compared with other heating methods in the current day and age. This is because of the fact that wood is a renewable energy source.

A lot of people are probably thinking ‘well wood has always been a renewable energy source, so what is the difference now?’ The truth is that it is merely to do with an increased amount of attention in relation to protecting the planet. Over the past few years there have been dramatic changes when it comes to individuals and companies operating as environmentally friendly as possible. This also includes those in this industry too, like local tree surgeons. Not only are we encouraged to be greener but we have further knowledge regarding the detrimental impact our actions cause. Using radiators, underfloor heating systems, air conditioning units and alike are all extremely energy intensive. They use a wealth of power and that is why wood is undoubtedly the go-to option at the present time.

So, let’s delve deeper into the ecological benefits of firewood for the home. The reason why this is the recommended solution is because when you are burning logs it is actually a natural part of the carbon cycle. This means that it does not add to the amount of greenhouse gases in the environment. So long as you use seasoned firewood you can rest assured that you are actually producing no more CO2 than a natural rotting tree. Thus, it is quite clear to see that wood is a lot more energy efficient than other options, such as fuel oil, gas or coal.

Nevertheless, the emphasis is placed on the fact that you must use seasoned wood. This is actually imperative anyway. If you use green wood (freshly cut) then you will be burning logs that contain far too much fire. Not only will the fire be ineffective but it will be dangerous as well. Moreover, using wood that has not been dried for over six months is detrimental to your ecological efforts. If you burn green logs you will release more pollutants into the environment.

To summarise, burning firewood is undoubtedly the recommended route to go down if you are looking for an energy efficient and cost effective way of warming your home over the winter period. As you can see by the facts represented in this article; you will be doing no more damage to the environment than a natural decaying tree causes anyway. Nonetheless, this will only be true if you use seasoned firewood, thus make sure you purchase your logs with a great amount of care.
