Magical Unicorn Activity Chest from The Works

06/10/2017

Unicorns seem to be absolutely everywhere these days. Maybe it’s just the fact that I’m more tuned in to them with a step-daughter who is obsessed, and also a daughter who currently hangs on to every word she says. The thing with having a daughter is that I see trends and obsessions from my childhood come round again with her, but the unicorn thing is something that I think completely passed me by when I was a child. I remember crazes for collecting erasers, those puffy stickers, random bits of stationery and even yo-yos advertising soft drinks, but unicorns don’t feature anywhere in my memories. Or maybe they just hadn’t discovered unicorns back then???

I happened to walk past The Works in the centre of St Albans with the kids the other day and LMC was instantly drawn towards a basket of unicorn cushions outside the shop. Before I could even speak she had disappeared into the shop and was mentally working out just how many unicorn things she could buy with her pocket money. I absolutely love The Works as there are always so many fantastic bargains to be had in there, and some gorgeous stationery bits to boot. I’m also a complete sucker when it comes to craft books of any description, and I’ve also discovered that they have some wonderful craft materials, especially papercraft related stuff.

LMC was therefore delighted when I chose to review the Magical Unicorn Activity Chest with her. This set is an absolute bargain at just £7. Not only does it contain a Unicorn Activity Book that is packed full of different activities ranging from word searches, to colouring by numbers and puzzles, it also has writing paper and envelopes, a set of colouring pencils, a unicorn eraser and stamp and also a selection of unicorn stickers.

As soon as she opened it LMC set about writing her step-sister a letter for when she next came to stay. Both the paper and envelope were decorated with the unicorn stamp and some of the stickers from the chest. She then settled down with the activity book and happily coloured in pictures for quite a while.

I was really pleased to see just how much there was for LMC to do with this Magical Unicorn Activity Chest and it was lovely to see her absorbed with it for so long. I also really liked the fact that when it was time to clear away she could simply put things back in the chest and then put it tidy away in her bedroom. Well, half of that is accurate at least!
