Thrifty Mrs C: How to save money when shopping online

15/05/2017

Online Shopping

Shopping. It’s the downfall of many of us when we’re trying to be thrifty, but it need not be. The truth is that it’s very hard not to shop at all. Some people do manage to go through the challenge of a year where they don’t buy anything new, but it is a real challenge for most people.  Generally in life we all need new things. Whether they be necessities, gifts for others or just things that we want to treat ourselves with. It’s also the case that there are plenty of other goods and services that we have to shell out for over a year, be it train tickets, utility bills or simply a food shop.

More and more of us do our shopping online now but it can be quite time consuming to shop around everywhere trying to find the best deal. With so many of us being “time poor” we just head straight to where we want to buy something from and complete the transaction. But in most cases you an be really missing out by doing so.

A couple of years ago now I had to buy a new washing machine and when trying to find the best deal online I stumbled upon an article which told me not to make a large purchase like that without going through a cashback site. I’d always been wary of sites like that before, but the prospect of being able to save about £50 on a washing machine that we couldn’t really afford at the time was too good to miss out on. So I ended up signing up with TopCashback.co.uk and I haven’t looked back since.

At the time there was a special offer on with AO.com which meant that as well as a percentage cash back I also got an extra lump sum. A real added bonus. Since then I make sure that I go via TopCashback whenever I’m doing something like booking train tickets or hotel rooms. They are things that I have to pay out for, but I get a bit of a (sad) thrill from knowing that I’ll be getting back some of what I have to pay. The same goes for utility deals. There are loads listed on there with cash back incentives and they’re definitely worth further investigation.

The other thing I love about TopCashback.co.uk is how easy it is to get your hands on your cash back once you’re earned it. OK you do have to wait a little while for the money to go into your account, as TopCashback themselves have to wait until they are paid by the merchant, but once you are in credit you simply choose how you want to be paid (which ranges from a BACS transfer or PayPal through to gift cards from various stores) and then away you go. The money can be in you back account within a couple of working days. You really have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Why not sign up right now?

I love cashback sites! I am so bad at remembering to use them though!

I think that once you get into the habit it becomes second nature. Until then though I agree it can take a bit of getting used to.
