Ladybird Tuesday: Tricks and Magic

When I was a child my Gran used to come and visit us every Saturday afternoon and we always ended up by having tea and scones round the dining table (with the same tea service) and something that was classed as "family entertainment" on the TV. Apart from the time that a hot airballoon had a crash-landing into a neighbours back garden (honestly – quite mad) the most exciting part for me was watching the Paul Daniels Magic Show whilst we ate. One year I was even lucky enough to receive a Paul Daniels Magic Set for Christmas. I was so excited!

I would have loved to have owned a copy of Tricks and Magic when I was a child. The book is packed full of little tricks that children will love to try. From the simple things of making your own magic wand and magician's hat through to making water disappear and blowing over a brick all of them are really very possible just using things that you have around the home.

There are card tricks, slight of hand tricks and mental tricks, all clearly explained and with the typical Ladybird illustrations that we all love to accompany them.

I was completely thrilled to find a copy of this in my local charity shop this week along with several other vintage Ladybirds. It's in excellent condition, with only a small bit of pencil writing in the front cover. A bargain really when you consider that I paid only £1.98 for all six books. No wonder I'm not telling anyone exactly which shop this was from!

Tricks and Magic was first published in 1969 and was part of series 633, Hobbies and Interests.
