There's only a week to go until Mother's Day here in the UK and I thinking about it this year is actually the first year that I've thought about the day in terms of me being the mother that the day is all about. I've always focussed on my mum (especialy since her birthday always falls within a week of Mother's Day too) and until now Little Miss C hasn't really be old enough to take in what it's all about. This year I know that they have been talking about what their mums do for them at nursery and also making gifts for us – she just couldn't contain her excitement about the pipe-cleaner flower that I'm apparently going to receive!
Bearing all this in mind it therefore seemed just the right time to read together Me and My Mum by Alison Ritchie and Alison Edgson. In this lovely picture book we get to see all the things that Little Bear does with his mum. The fun that they have together and also how Little Bear feels much more conifdent to do things when his mum is there to support him. The dark doesn't seem as scary when mum is by your side.
It was interesting timing to read this too as we have had a few instances lately where LMC has told us that she is scared of something and we've been trying to explain to her that she needn't be scared when mummy and daddy are there with her to look after her. I'm hoping that having read this at bedtime together quite a few times now the message is getting home.
Me and My Mum is a lovely book for a child to share with their mum and would make a perfect gift from a toddler to their mum (hint, hint to any daddies reading!) We've really enjoyed reading it together and I hope it's helped LMC see that she can rely on me when she needs to and also helps her see all the fun we have together, despite me having to nag her to get certain things done around the house!
