Review: Little Learners from Parragon Books

15/05/2012

It’s well known as to how much Little Miss C loves books and she seems to get excited whenever the postman arrives with a package and has started asking if all parcels that arrive are books for her!

We were both very pleased to open one jiffy bag containing a selection of books from the new Little Learners range from Parragon Books. The first thing that strikes you about the Little Learners books is that they are lovely soft muted colours rather than the usual primary colours of baby and toddler books. They are also incredibly tactile books too, more so than many others in our collection.

NightNight

Night Night is a perfect book for little hands. With foam pages it’s nice and light for a small child to hold, but thick enough pages for them to be able to turn them easily. Each page features a familiar object from a usual bedtime routine and can help young children understand and recognise that routine easily.

Animals

Animals follows a well known format of animal pictures with touch and feel features like a woolly back on a sheep. What I did particularly like about this book though is that there are a few different things in there. The shiny scales on the fish for instance are a favourite of Little Miss C’s.

ICanShare

All parents want their children to be polite to others and I Can Share aims to demonstrate to toddlers exactly how they can do that. On each page an animal says what they can say in particular scenarios – for example “I can say “please” when I want to join in.” For each page there is also a corresponding pull out tab (with the same animal on it) which takes things a step further – for example “I can say “you’re welcome” when my friend says thank you” – and I really liked this way of expanding the basic message in the book as the child you’re reading it with is ready. The tabs themselves are nice and big and sturdy meaning that once again they’re ideal for little fingers.

I really like the scenarios in this last book in particular and I’m hoping that reading it with LMC over the next few months will help prepare her for the arrival of a little brother or sister – especially the pages about waiting her turn and sharing things.

The Little Learners range has been designed in partnership with education consultants and tested by mums and babies and they do stand apart from many other things on the market. The full range covers all the different stages of a child’s development and also aims to make the reading experience a fun one that is also interactive for the child – there are things for them to touch and move as they read it with an adult.

The full Little Learners range is available at all major retailers including Tesco, WH Smith, Sainsbury’s, Amazon and Early Learning Centre.
