We've had a house full of sick people this last week so there's not been much to blog about (or much time to do so – my washing machine has never been busier!) We're not quite at the end yet, but I'm hoping we're not far off.
Someone today sent me a link to this article in the Daily Mail: My (very slimming) week as a 50s housewife. I'm not normally a Mail reader, but this did make an interesting read over a cuppa. I'm trying to track down the Good Housekeeping book that they mention though and when I have a bit more mental capacity and time it'd be interesting to compare and contrast this with the 1930s housewife challenge that some bloggers have been doing lately, and it also fits in quite nicely with Nella Last in the 1950s which I'm reading at the moment.

Finding Inner Peace Going Back To The 1950’s Style
By D.K. Milgrim-Heath©2011
Finding inner peace going back to the 1950’s style-
You become fitter and healthier so can it be worth your while?
Consuming less calories because housewives had more of a physical demand-
Without most modern conveniences you did things by hand.
You wore 50s styles those very feminine clothes everywhere-
Always had on make-up and coiffed up pretty hair.
Never had modern phones or other gadgets too-
You still survived the world that was around you!
Transportation then didn’t always mean having car-
You walked or rode buses always because as it wasn’t far.
Obesity wasn’t a problem because calories were burned off fast-
In modern times things are different as calories make our bodies fatter and seem to last.
You had fresher cooking ingredients not the unhealthy stuff we have now-
Everything was fresher mostly organic then and how!
Not everyone had TV’s so your children went outside to play-
Never had computers growing up I remember that –those days of yesterday!
Your children didn’t do Facebook or any texting too-
They’ll survive the time without it and really so will you!
No after dinner TV watching you talked with your spouse and turned on the radio-
That was very different and it’s an early bedtime for both of you!
Another day doing laundry not owning a washing machine –
Your things were washed with powdered soap in your hands and they make out clean.
You got very tired by that chore in every way you could really be.
So you see how physical housework life was more in the 50’s actually.
Back then household chores did amount the same as a gym workout today-
Sewing, cooking, ironing, dishwashing (by hand) were things you did every day.
You also beat your throw around rugs always by hand-
It was a woman’s job and no husband in the 50’s didn’t help do understand!
Husbands back the left household duties only to his wife-
He came home from work relaxing as his wife still was working with her housewife life.
Without blaring TV’s, cell phones ringing or the various computers pinging away-
The quietness of one’s Fifties house is unbelievable in that way!
You talked together with your family more instead of running towards use your computer screens-
Everything seemed nicer then with family quality time just seeing what that really means.
Most women did all their own sewing for do interior decorating that is for another day-
The subject for this commentary wore a pedometer stated walking at home daily was mile equivalent in every way!
Of course one has a break of a quick cup of something momentarily-
Then it is back to another ‘lovely exciting’ chore absolutely!
The 50’s woman always looked best for their husband-I have the beautiful memories of my mom always being that way-
No excuses you always looked beautiful day after day.
Good Housekeeping book stated by your 40’s a man relies on his woman to be perfect in every detail in everyday-
You as the wife had the assuredness that younger women couldn’t meet those standards yet in that way.
Ah yes! Nivea those memories of my mother at night wearing it-
No wonder the 50’s women had more beautiful skin so fabulous and fit!
One’s children appreciate their Mom wearing make-up and heels every day-
While other mothers think you’re in a mid-life crisis acting strangely that way!
Your schedule gets off keel if you bus transportation runs 30 minutes late-
Being hot/ stressed and your kids are late for school and one’s morning chores to do are piled upon your plate.
Going to stores in person is nicer plus meeting people than doing internet delivery shopping as you need-
Internet delivery shopping’s much more impersonal oh yes really indeed!
You get more quality time with your children there’s a calmness and better behavioral pattern without the TV.
They want more time spent with you as a parent quite noticed you see!
Your husband seems happier with a radio making its musical sound-
He enjoys it together with conversation really being around.
Now the five day nostalgic 50’s time capsule is over and regular routines will be again once more-
Re-entering the world of TV, computers and Facebook as it was before.
Chores seemed enjoyable, weight fell off and the peacefulness in this family was really unfurled-
Gone are the 50’s but you learned meaningful lesson of the past from that other world.

I loved that article about the 1950’s week! Did you ever find the book she was talking about? I’d love to get a copy.
Also, what is the 1930’s challenge?

Sadly Ive not found it yet. There were a couple of things on Amazon and eBay that might have been right, but I wasnt sure. Ive not had time to check my local library yet, but I will be doing so.
The 1930s challenge was a challenge that several UK bloggers did recently where they tried to live like a 1930s housewife for a while. They were given some of the things that women at the time would have had by Proctor Gamble and blogged all about what they got up to. It made some very interesting reading.

Thank you, Mrs. C. Please keep me updated if you find that book. Do you happen to have any links to the bloggers who wrote about the 1930’s challenge? It sounds like it would be lovely reading.
