It's funny how some things from childhood can evoke such memories when you see them again years later. Mr C visited his parents with LMC over the weekend and came home with four books that had belonged to him and his brothers when they were all small.
The three Janet and Allan Ahlberg books (Peepo!, Each Peach Pear Plum and Cops and Robbers ) are ones that I don't remember (that doesn't necessarily mean I didn't read them!) but they instantly reminded me of one of my favourite books from that time: Funnybones. The Tiger Who Came to Tea is yet another children's book that somehow passed me by until just a few months ago when I actually bought a new copy for LMC. Despite the fact that the words and pictures are identical there's something that I can't quite explain which makes this well thumbed copy that Mr C had and remembered when he saw the new copy so much nicer.
In a recent quest to find nice books to read to LMC at bedtime I took guidance from some of the lovely blogs that I read and as a result I bought these two lovely books: Pat the Bunny and Goodnight Moon. Whilst Goodnight Moon is a simple, rhythmical tale that's perfect for bedtime, Pat the Bunny is just such a scrumptious book that it almost seems too good for a small child. First published in 1940, its old world charm is instant and it seems amazing just how interactive a book it was for its time. If you're looking to buy a nice gift for a baby, or just want something nice yourself, then its quiet simply perfect.
