As today's the first day in a week that Mr C has made it into work in central London by train this film seemed like appropriate viewing. From the BFI National Archive it really does make you realise how much better we were back then at coping. I certainly can't see our local train company going to this sort of effort to get people to where they want to go.
Enjoy the film – Snow (1963) – and thanks to Cornflower for making me aware of it in the first place.

That was brilliant!!! What great music arrangement to go with the footage!
My Dad used to work for the Great Western Railway (as did my Grandfather) and he was known as a railway length man…. he had one piece of track that was his responsibility to walk daily whatever the weather, checking the track keys etc… I remember as a child my Dad been called in to do snow duty…. and snow NEVER stopped the trains running! My Dad bless his heart would be horrified at the ‘bits’ of snow we have these days stopping the running of the trains!!

Great film…loved the steam trains with snow ploughs…..and the coal fire in the signal box! A bit manic towards the end though!

That was fabulous – thanks for sharing:) I just remember the winter of 1963 too.
Bit ironic with the train speeding past the stuck lorries and cars; these days the emphasis is on the road users, keeping the roads open at all costs as so much more is transported by raod these days, after the loss of so many branchlines, etc. Teh trains are left literally on teh sidelines as they can’t cope with the snow.
I’m not even sure if a modern train can be fitted with a snowplough? Probably not, but it might be something to be considered for next winter!
Thanks again.
