It feels like I've been neglecting this blog a bit over the last couple of week. Sorry, but life just seems to have been getting in the way of all the things I want to do. I need to try and maximise my evenings a bit more now that I've gone back to work. I seem to be struggling with this at the moment, but fingers crossed that I can create a better work – life balance over the next week.
This weekend is a busy one down at the WWA as tomorrow we are holding our annual Wassail. We have an orchard area at the WWA and every January we always invite local people to go wassailing, which involves singing the health of the trees in the hope that they will thrive for the next harvest season. The ceremony is normally led by a Wassail King and involves making a great deal of noise (in our case using party poppers and banging metal dustbins) in order to scare the evil spirits away from the trees. Cider is usually poured on the roots of the tree and toast hung up in the branches of trees themselves.
In the past few years we have attracted as many as 200 people to our small orchard where the Wicket Brood help to entertain the visitors. The committee makes refreshments for everyone and generally a good time is had by all.
This morning involved some of the set up for tomorrow's event. The main part is getting the awning up so that tomorrow the refreshments can be served from under it. This awning was expertly designed by our chairman, but does take a little bit of effort every year for us to remember exactly how it fits together.
Our biggest concern for tonight is that the weather forecast is for 30 mile an hour winds between 9pm and midnight tonight, along with 35 mph gusts. Fingers crossed that it survives until morning, although I guess that some of our committee may well be down there with torches later on to check on how it is.
Whist setting up I also got to see the fantastic new glove drying rack that one of our committee members managed to pick up from the closing down sale at the St Albans's branch of Woolworths.
This display rack used to be used for selling umbrellas, but is now perfect for us to use for drying gloves after working parties. In the past they just used to end up in a drawer until the next event, but this at least allows them to dry out properly and gets rids of that slightly damp feeling when you come to put a pair on. A good bit of reusing in my opinion!
