Toad in the Hole

30/10/2008

Toad

I had a strange craving at lunchtime today for Toad in the Hole – so that's what I had to make us for dinner tonight. Shockingly, it something I've not made before and I was there looking through all my cook books for a recipe. Even more embarrassing is that I couldn't find one in any of my books!

The Internet saved the day and I found this Delia recipe for Toad in the Hole with Roasted Onion Gravy. (Slight error in the recipe though as it tells you that the gravy part includes one teaspoon of golden caster sugar, yet following the instructions you don't actually seem to add it!)

Very yummy though. We just served it up with some broccoli and it made a perfect week night supper on a cold winter's evening.

I love Delia. Delia taught me how to make white sauce, properly. Not personally of course, but the next best thing (tv).
I had to look up Toad in the Hole. It being an English thing. It does look delicious.

Great looking Toad in the Hole. I’ve got that recipe in one of Delia’s books and the sugar gets sprinkled on the onions before you oven roast them.

toad in the hole is very popular in our house with the little ones, who like individual “holes”, but object to the “lumps” in the gravy…..
