‘Living In a Self-Sufficient Home

We’re used to living in a society where someone else provides us with everything we need. But not all too long ago, people lived much more self sufficient lives. Sure, the convenience of being able to buy anything you might need is great. But sometimes, it can feel much more rewarding – or can actually prove much more beneficial – to run a self sufficient home. Here are some areas to focus on that you might want to try out!

Generating Your Own Electricity

Nowadays, most homes use electricity and increasing numbers of homes are cutting out gas completely, entirely running on this greener energy option. But have you ever considered generating your own electricity? Generating your own electricity by having solar panels installed on the roof of your property or in another area of your property can significantly reduce your energy bills. Plus, if you generate more than you can use, you can always sell the excess back to the national grid! You’ll have your mains energy there just in case you need it, so don’t have to worry about potentially running out, but it’s a great place to start on your journey to self sufficiency!

Having Your Own Water Supply

Sure, you should largely rely on your mains source of water. But if you use a lot of water, or if you ever experience a cut out, you will be forever thankful for having your own water tank. You can get tanks in all shapes and sizes to suit your needs. Browse the selection available at The Water Tank Factory if you’re interested in what’s available.

Growing Your Own Herbs, Fruit and Vegetables

Of course, unless you live on a farm, it’s highly unlikely that you’ll be able to completely live off your own produce. But you can take a step in that direction and have a little self sufficiency in regards to your meals by growing your own herbs, fruit and vegetables. Now, there are countless things that you can grow, given that you’re willing to create the right environment and put the effort in. You could try potatoes, onions, tomatoes, strawberries, apples, pears and more. In regards to herbs, it’s extremely simply to set up a herb garden in a window box or simply potted outdoors. There are countless perks to growing your own food. Besides the general sense of fulfilment in knowing that you’ve provided elements of your meals from scratch, you can rest assured that they will be free of pesticides and other nasties!

These are just a few different areas of self sufficiency that you might want to take into consideration. There are plenty more approaches out there that you can try, but these tend to be some of the most popular! They’re easy to implement and can give you a sense of protection and fulfillment. So why not give them a go?
