As a busy mum there is little that upsets our daily routine more than discovering that something in the kitchen no longer works. You've got the week's meals all planned out and suddenly you discover (usually at the last minute when a child is already demanding food) that you've no way of cooking what you planned to give them.
Firstly – don't panic! These things are often not as bad as you first fear. Oven repairs can be relatively simple once the exact problem has been diagnosed. It may be that the oven no longer gets hot as the thermostat control is broken, that it's no longer getting the electricity or gas that it needs to work, or it could just be that the electronics controlling the clock or buttons are not working any more. In these austere times it is definitely worth working out if an appliance can be fixed before you think about replacing it. Not only should repairs save you money, but they also mean that you're not throwing an old appliance away unnecessarily, and that helps reduce landfill.
Nowadays, there are plenty of companies now who can give you a quote online or on the phone as to how much it will cost to repair your oven before you agree to get anyone out to look at it. Parts will be a cost on top of this (as they won't know what needs replacing until they actually look at it), but it really helps you to ensure that repair bills will not get out of hand.
In the short term – just make sure you've always got something in to eat that doesn't require cooking just in case. Just a block of cheese in the fridge and a loaf of bread means you can always make cheese sandwiches and I'm yet to meet anyone who doesn't like a good simple cheese sandwich!
