Ladybird Tuesday: Scouts

Ladybird Scouts

My Ladybird collecting obsession is now at the stage where I have to carry round in my handbag two little notebooks containing a list of all the Ladybird titles in my collection, arranged by series. Otherwise it seems I can no longer remember which ones I have or which ones I just dream of having. Against each series I also have a tally number so that I know just how many there are out there in the series. Ladybird were a bit strange in that they had several series where there was only one or two titles, yet other series that had many more. One series that is exactly the right size is ... read more

Ladybird Tuesday: The Story of Saint Paul

12/08/2014

The Story of Saint Paul

There's nothing like a Ladybird book for making you realise just how little you know! That's certainly the case with the second of my finds from our Cornwall holiday - The story of Saint Paul. I was rather pleased with this find as it's my first book from their Religious series (series 522), but when I came to read it I soon discovered how much of my Religious Education from school I've either forgotten, or was never taught in the first place. Now St Paul was actually born around the same time as Jesus and as a child was called Saul. He was the son of two prominent Jews in the Mediterranean ... read more

Ladybird Tuesday: Lost at the Fair

29/07/2014

Lost at the Fair

We're jumping about a bit between the years here on Ladybird Tuesday as we're going from the 1980s last week to a book that was first published in the 1940s - 1948 to be precise (although this is a 1970s reprint I think). Lost at the Fair is part of the Animal Rhymes series (series 401) which was a set of lovely stories, all written in verse, making them perfect to be read out loud to young children. Lost at the Fair is the story of two little dormice whose mother is woken one morning by Mr Squirrel telling her that the fair has some to town. She wakes up her chidden and as soon as they ... read more

Ladybird Tuesday: Dinosaurs

Ladybird Dinosaurs

It seems last week's Ladybird Tuesday post went a bit AWOL. I'm pretty sure I remember writing it, but it's certainly no where to be seen online, and the book I thought I wrote about was actually covered months ago on here. Maybe I imagined the whole thing! Anyway - on to this week. I've chosen to go back to the Ladybird Leaders series (series 737) this week and in particular book number seven from that series - dinosaurs. The whole idea behind the Leaders series was that they were first information books, designed for enquiring minds and to stimulate reluctant readers. I've heard many ... read more

Ladybird Tuesday: ‘People at work’ The Policeman

06/05/2014

There's been a bit of a break here on Ladybird Tuesday whilst I sorted out the behind the scenes blog stuff, but this week I'm delighted to say that we're back! And I have a wonderful new charity shop find to share too. The very first Ladybird Tuesday featured In a Hotel from the 606B People at Work series and it therefore seems appropriate to be back there for the first post on this new blog hosting platform. I'm bringing a bit of law and order to proceedings by featuring The Policeman which was the second book to be published in this popular series. It was 1962 when Ladybird first ... read more
