Ladybird Tuesday: The Public Services – Water Supply

06/06/2017

Ladybird The Public Services Water Supply Ladybird Tuesday

Way, way back in the early days of Ladybird Tuesday I dipped into series 606E, The Public Services, looking at Electricity. I even commented at the times about how the whole concept of Electricity, Gas and Water being public services was vintage in itself. Years on, it's time to revisit the series again, but this time we've moved on to the Water Supply. I still smile to see this book labelled as being "A Ladybird 'Easy-Reading' Book", but then when I consider some of the slightly obscure titles that Little Miss C brings home as school reading books maybe it isn't as strange as I used to ... read more

Ladybird Tuesday: Trains

09/05/2017

Ladybird Leaders Trains

Oh the dalliances I'm having with Ladybird Tuesday! It comes back every now and again, before vanishing without even a goodbye. I'm sincerely hoping that this will be the start of a proper return, but bearing in mind how late in the day I'm finally getting round to writing this post this Tuesday, you never know... But enough of that and on to the book itself. Now Master C is more than a little obsessed with trains right now. In fact, I'm not even sure that "obsessed" is a strong enough word to be using. His whole day seems to revolve around either talking about trains, playing with ... read more

Ladybird Tuesday: The Do-Gooder

Ladybird The Do-Gooder

And we're back! With the most irregular regular blog feature ever - Ladybird Tuesday. Now, keeping in with the theme of all my other recent blog posts here, I'm doing something a little bit different again this week and I'm going to be talking about another new Ladybird title. This time it's The Ladybird Book of the Do-Gooder. Just in case you haven't worked it out by now I should probably explain that this special title has been released to coincide with this year's Comic Relief, and at least £2 from the sale of the book go to Comic Relief. As with the other modern day Ladybird titles ... read more

Ladybird Tuesday: Learning to Crochet

Ladybird Learning to Crochet

I've been trying to bring Ladybird Tuesday back several times now, but each time I appear to get half way through writing a post and then everything goes a bit wrong. This time though I've chosen a title that I do feel very passionate about in the hope that it keeps me on track somewhat - Learning to Crochet! Now, anyone who follows me on Instagram or who has read my post about 2016 in Crochet will know that over the last couple of years I have become a complete crochet addict. I have two crochet blankets on the go at the moment (the Moorland CAL from Lucy at Attic24 and also my third Spice ... read more

Ladybird Tuesday: How to Make Presents

Ladybird How To Make Presents

Oh dear - we've been AWOL again haven't we with Ladybird Tuesday. This new school routine has taken a bit of getting used to since September, but with half term now out of the way it's time to crack on until Christmas. And talking about Christmas - as my email inbox appears to be doing already this morning - it might be time to start thinking about presents. Ladybird have got this covered with their 1978 book handily titled How to make Presents. Now this title was part of series 633, but one of the additional titles that was brought out in the 1970s. The series was originally called ... read more

Ladybird Tuesday: ‘People at Work’ The Builder

13/09/2016

Ladybird People at Work The Builder

Tuesday last week seemed to completely pass me by - I'll blame the change of routine for going back to school meaning that I'm still struggling to know what day of the week it is. Ladybird Tuesday is back though so this week we're going to have a look at The Builder, part of the People at Work series, 606B. Now, builders today are somewhat different characters to those in 1965 when this particular Ladybird book was written. For a start a couple of them in this book appear to be wearing a shirt and tie and there's not a white van in sight! Reading this book back now Ladybird really do ... read more

Ladybird Tuesday: We go to the gallery

02/08/2016

Ladybird We go to the gallery

Tuesday's haven't quite been the same for a few months now. The Ladybird collecting hasn't slowed down here, but there's just not been much time to write about them and share them here. I've really missed Ladybird Tuesday though. I've missed going through my collection and selecting gems to share. There's something rather comforting about Ladybird books - a reminder of a previous time when the world didn't seem quite such the confusing and screwed up place it is right now. Last week's news of Ladybird planning more humorous titles later this year (just in time for Christmas) made me think ... read more

Ladybird Tuesday: Cataloging the Collection

16/02/2016

Ladybird Tally Numbers

You may have noticed I've gone a bit quite again. There's a very simple reason this time - I'm spending every spare minute finally cataloging my Ladybird collection! When I started collecting Ladybird books I have to admit that I had no real idea what I was doing. I remembered them fondly from my childhood, but had no idea of how many Ladybird books were out there - I just liked the ones I'd spotted in charity shops so decided to start buying them. Several years down the line there are over 400 books in my collection and they are somewhat scattered across the house. With the help of a ... read more

Ladybird Tuesday: Learnabout Camping

19/01/2016

Ladybird Learnabout Camping

I couldn't really feature any other Ladybird book after last week's blog post, could I? Learnabout Camping is one of the later books in the Learnabout series (series 634) and was first published in 1977. The thing which sets it aside a bit from some of the other Learnabout books that I've featured here before, is the inclusion of cartoons like the one on the cover. Whilst the book contains the typical Ladybird illustrations (this time by Eric Winter) there are also a series of cartoons by Martin Aitchison dotted throughout the book. These are very different in style to the illustrations ... read more

Ladybird Tuesday: How it Works The Husband

05/01/2016

Ladybird The Husband

Happy New Year Ladybird fans! All that Christmas card and letter writing put me a bit behind schedule in the run up to Christmas, but now the kids are back at school (and most importantly Master C in pre-school on Tuesdays!) Ladybird Tuesday is back to stay. And how else to start, but with the Christmas best seller The Husband. The Husband is one of the new series of comedy Ladybird titles which take a look at some of the modern day problems that now face those who grew up reading original Ladybird titles. All written by Joel Morris and Jason Hazeley these books combine original ... read more
