Master C is a five year old boy. It's therefore to be expected that he has an obsession with poo at the moment. It's one of his favourite things to shout out at inappropriate moments, and for about six months now he seems to have an obsession with calling me "Professor Poo Poo Pants". I'm trying to follow the parenting course advice of not reacting to the name calling in the hope that he will finally get bored and move on to something else. I'm not sure he ever really will though! I'm therefore not at all sure if agreeing to review the game Poopyhead with the kids was such a good idea. ... read more
Morphy Richards Toaster and Kettle set
Role play is such a vital part of a child's development. Talk to any Early Years practitioner and they will tell you about what an important stage it is and why pre-schools, nurseries and reception classes all have role play areas and how much the children gain from playing in them. It's part of how they make sense of the world around them and understand their roles within the world. It stimulates their imagination, aids their social development and can also help children understand scenarios that they may have encountered in real life. For most children role playing home situations is ... read more
Cutie Stix
As soon as Little Miss C saw a TV advert for Cutie Stix she was convinced that she needed them in her life. Since we've been sent them to review I can now see exactly why. Cutie Stix perfectly combine crafting and cuteness with jewellery, ticking the boxes as far as LMC is concerned. So what exactly are Cutie Stix I hear you ask. Well, a Cutie Stix is basically a rubber stick. There are three sizes in the set - in decreasing order, Mighty Stix, Cutie Stix and Teeny Stix. The idea is that you cut "slices" of the stix, and then put holes in them so that they can be threaded onto ... read more
Easy Braids
I feel I should start this blog post with a bit of a disclaimer. I've never exactly been a girly girl. Yes, I do like nice dresses and shoes, and sometimes I've even been known to spend time getting my hair and make up right. But on the flip side I'm equally just as happy in jeans and a t-shirt with my hair scraped back in an elastic band - much as I am when sat here writing this. Little Miss C gets her hair tied back most days in either a pony tail or a plait, but, much to her disappointment, I'm not one for following long winded YouTube tutorials to be able to recreate fancy creations in her ... read more
Wobbly Worm
It's fair to say that my relationship with Wobbly Worm got off to a bit of a shaky start. Or maybe that should have been a wobbly start. I had great hopes for this outdoor toy and thought that it would be perfect to take along to Wine and Wigwams with me for a spot of evening fun after a bit of vino. I packed it in the car along with everything else, but rather stupidly didn't pack any batteries. The Wobbly Worm takes two C size batteries and strangely we couldn't find anything on the campsite that had this size batteries in it at all, so we didn't get any further than putting it together ... read more
what2buy4kids – Toy Time Machine
Anyone who knows me will know that I love everything vintage that relates to children. Especially books and toys. I therefore love this infographic from what2buy4kids. It's fascinating to see how things have changed over the years. But, at the same time, it's great to see how some firm favourites that are still played with regularly here. Master C is especially fond of his Hornby trains and Little Miss C still plays with My Little Pony dolls on a frequent basis. Which of these vintage (or more modern) favourites do you have in your home? ... read more
Ravensburger Bugs in the Kitchen #GoGadgetFree for National Unplugging Day
This Sunday (27 June 2017) sees us celebrating National Unplugging Day. A day on which parents are pledging to #GoGadgetFree and spend from sun-up to sun-down without technology. It's like a return to a previous time; a time when children weren't glued to screens all day long and played together either using their own imagination or playing a board game together. As part of National Unplugging Day we were asked to review Ravensburger's fantastic game Bugs In The Kitchen. Now I first saw this game when I visited the Toy Fair in London back in January. At the time I was blown away by how ... read more
Discovery Kids Digital Walkie Talkies
With a year's family camping experience under our belt now we've learnt quite a bit about what sorts of things we should take with us on camping trips. Everything from a dust pan and brush to washing pegs. We've also learnt a fair bit about camping with children and in particular how the kids want to go and explore as much of the campsite as possible, yet it can at times be a bit hard to keep tabs on where they are, especially if on a large campsite. What we had spotted was lots of children having walkie talkies, either to talk to each other, or for their parents to be able to summon them back ... read more
How to buy toys cheaply with The Amazing Mystery Box
As a parent I'm always looking at thrifty ways to live life and provide for my kids. The truth is that family life is expensive and there always seem to be things that need buying. One area where I try really hard to save money though is when it comes to gifts - both for my own kids and for others - and hence I'm always after ways to buy toys cheaply. I'm often trying to pick up things that I know my kids wants for birthday and Christmas in advance when I see them in a sale or promotion, and I also have a "present cupboard" where I pop things that I pick up over the year that can then be used ... read more
The Powerpuff Girls Story Maker Dine and Dash Playset
I'm not quite sure how the Powerpuff Girls arrived in our lives, but they most certainly did so with a bit of a bang. Little Miss C just suddenly knew all about Blossom, Bubble and Buttercup and their father Professor Utonium. LMC loves nothing more than having strong female role models to look up to and that's exactly what these girls are. It does seem slightly bonkers though (and makes me feel rather old) that next year the series will be 20 years old. How is that possible??? LMC was therefore thrilled when I brought home the new Dine and Dash Storymaker playset for her to review. ... read more
