Is it totally wrong of me to say that I’ve got to the stage of the year where I’m actually starting to get a teeny bit excited about autumn coming around again? I guess I like every season really, but I also always seems to feel ready for the next one to roll around and there’s something about autumn that I really enjoy. Walks in the crisp air. Leaves changing colour. Snuggling up under a blanket on the sofa on a dark evening.
I also find that it’s the time of year when we get some very cute children’s books coming out and Wide-awake Hedgehog is a great example. Many children will have already met Isaac the hedgehog in The Very Helpful Hedgehog but he’s now back in this new book which is a lovely tale about autumn and hibernation and children who are not sleepy at bedtime.
It’s time for Isaac to hibernate for the winter, but like so many little ones he just isn’t sleepy. In fact, he’s wide awake and wants to play. He goes round all his animal friends in an attempt to find a playmate, but all of them are busy getting ready to hibernate, or so sleepy that they simply can’t stay awake to play. There’s only one friend left for Isaac to play with. An invisible friend. But will she be able to wear him out so that he’s sleepy enough to hibernate?
We’d not come across Isaac the hedgehog before, but he’s an adorably cute little character, both in terms of what he gets up to and as depicted in Rosie Wellesley’s lovely illustrations too. Wide-awake Hedgehog is a lovely book to read with kids as we move into autumn and start to talk about what that means for all the various animals that hibernate.
Wide-awake Hedgehog by Rosie Wellesley is published by Pavilion Books on 8th September 2016. Paperback £6.99 ISBN 9781843653097
