Why this week I’m going to shout praise for Tesco!

09/08/2013

On my Working with Mrs C page I've always said that if a company really impresses me then I'm more than happy to provide them with some free advertising here on my blog. In the past I've happily dished out some of this free love to small independents and local shops, but today it's time to actually give praise to a huge company who I know already have a substantial advertising budget. But, they've impressed me so much with one little thing that I want to tell you about it here anyway.

The company in question is Tesco and what has impressed me so much is actually their All in One Contact Lens Solution. So, what's so good about it?

TescoContactsLensSolution

I should say that I know nothing about the chemical composition of contact lens solution and generally, if it cleans my lenses, doesn't make my eyes hurt when I next wear them and isn't too expensive then I'm happy.

Until now I've been generally buying all in one contact lens solution from either chain chemists or supermarkets and I'd just pick it up wherever was most convenient when I next needed some. About a month ago I needed some more and I happened to be popping into my local Tesco so went to pick up a bottle off the shelf there. At first I thought I was reaching for the wrong stuff as normally the lens solution comes in a cardboard box so that they can put in a new lens case as well, but the bottle was just there on the shelf on its own in Tesco. And that's where the beauty of this product sits – the bottle design. Let's look at that bottle again…

Firstly, they've done away with the need for a carboard box (and therefore reduced the amount of packaging – brilliant on the eco side of things) by making the bottle a shape where the lens case that comes with it neatly slips into place on the side of the bottle. Small grooves in the plastic of the bottle hold it in place so you can store the case with the bottle, reducing the chances of losing it, especially if you're travelling.

The clear plastic that the bottle is made of is also a really useful thing as you can actually see how much lens solution is left, rather than just guessing as you have to do when you can't see.

It may all sound like such a simple thing, but both Mr C and I found ourself amazed and excited at the bottle design (I know, I know, we should get out more!) and so impressed with it. I know it's only contact lens solution, but it's really nice to see a product where someone has thought about how people use the product so carefully, and then the brand behind it has actually put it into production.

So well done Tesco, and a very big pat on the back to whoever designed the bottle!

Disclaimer: Just in case it's not already obvious, I have received no payment for this post, no free contact lens solution, nor any other perk! However, if you think you've got a clever piece of design work that you'd like to shout about what I say on my working with Mrs C page still stands – really impress me and you may get some free advertising.
