Last night Mr C and I were attending a local nature reserve committee meeting. The meeting was originally supposed to be last week, the night before my birthday, and hence I had planned to take along some birthday cake. The meeting was re-arranged though, but I still thought cake was in order. As it was supposed to be a birthday cake I thought that chocolate cake had to be in order.
I searched all my cookbooks and decided upon a recipe for “Bruce Bogtrtter’s Heroic Chocolate Cake” from Jane Brocket’s Cherry Cake and Ginger Beer: A Golden Treasury of Classic Treats. Until I read Jane’s book I have to admit to having never heard of Bruce Bogtrotter. He apparently is a large child in Roald Dahl’s Matilda, one of the few children’s books that I haven’t read.
The chocolate cake produced by this recipe is unbelievably rich in flavour and quite simply delicious to eat. When applying the icing between the two layers Mr C decided that a layer of raspberry jam was also required, as well as the chocolate icing. This seems to give the cake a wonderful sweet edge when you bite through a slice.
Overall a fantastic recipe – as long as you’re not counting the calories!

I wasn’t too sure about the jam either, but Mr C insisted and it tasted fantastic!
The one thing in the recipe I’m not too sure about is the time in the oven, but then we have an unbelievable fierce, variable oven which makes estimating times very difficult!
